Last week we spent a day with Tour Guide John and driver Salvador visiting the Guanacaste wetlands. It was an amazing day and well worth the time and money. John did a wonderful job teaching us about the wildlife and vegetation of Guanacaste and of Costa Rica as well. He is very well prepared and very skilled in his work. Salvador was helpful in pointing out animals and sights along the way. We rode the ziplines with Hernan, who is also very well versed in the Guanacaste region and very hospitable as well. He made us feel safe throughout the rides. The boat captain, Jacinto, was superb, pointing out crocodiles and coati mundis and other wildlife. All in all, it was an outstanding day. We recommend this tour to anyone who wants to have fun while learning about this beautiful natural setting. Thank you, John, Hernan, Salvador, and Jacinto, for hosting our very special day.

If you are looking for a wonderful way to see the wildlife and not be crammed on a boat with others this is the way to go. The guides were terrific, friendly and informative. The guide and boat Captain spotted crocodiles, white faced monkeys, howler monkeys and a variety of birds for us to see up close. They shared a wealth of information about the river, wildlife and environment. The grounds of the refuge and wetland are gorgeous. Sugar crops make up a large part of the grounds and drive to the main building and river. We were planning on taking another more advertised river boat trip but after driving up the very long rock and dirt road we discovered they did not take credit cards and being we were doing this on our own and not through a tour it was going to be a disappointment until they very thoughtfully called up the road to El Viejo to see if they had availability on a boat tour, which they did and they accept credit cards. We were pleasantly surprised being the only 4 on the boat with the captain and guide. The gift shop is beautiful. It was a wonderful way to end our trip to Costa Rica and I suggest for anyone to go here for this boat adventure.

Lovely property and very professional tour guides. We went on the zipline which was perfect for our children, including my 5 year old. Not the most exciting for the adults, but still lots of fun and very safe with double harness and double zip line. We saw coatimundi in the trees.
The boat ride was amazing. Very informative and saw lots of crocs, howler and capuchin monkeys, birds, iguana, and bats. Hernand was our guide very good. The meal at the end of the tour was the best we had in Costa Rica!
i would recommend booking directly with them beause you will get a tour guide that actually works there and is more familiar with the animals and the sights.
The drive is long and bumpy - be prepared. Make sure you have bug spray.

We decided to go to El Viejo instead of Palo Verde as it seemed closer to our hotel and we could avoid the Pan American Highway. Not hard to find it is well marked. Prices are slightly higher than in Palo Verde as it is a private enterprise but they make sure you get to see lots on the boat with Crocodiles, monkeys and all kind of birds. The guides are knowledgeable and take the lunch as it is just phantastic. Best food we had in Costa Rica! They take good care of you and the hacienda is beautiful.

We drove our rental car from Flamingo Beach Hotel to El Viejo, had to ask directions several times as signage is not good. It took us 2 hours to get there, not the one hour the hotel said it would, but this was true of all time estimates we were given, so allow extra time. The boat ride was very nice, our guide Roy was O.K., but probably disappointed at our very small group, with less tips to give. On the way back from the river,we followed the other car in which Roy was in, and the driver (a tourist in his own car) drove so fast that we lost him on the road. There are many winding roads, as it is sugar plantation. We got lost for awhile.I could not imagine why the guide let the driver lose us, until the driver later told us he fell asleep in the car. All in all we enjoyed the natural river areas and wildlife, and it is a peaceful ride in which senior citizens would be able to also enjoy. It cost $63 for the tour and lunch. The food was good.
