Came across this lovely onsen hotel while driving through Sōunkyō, and decided to check if a room was available. While ordinary looking outside, it was a pleasant find indeed. We stayed in a newly-renovated room on the fifth floor - it was spacious, clean, and comfortable. There were some tidbits provided too. For 26,000 yen for 2 person, it comprised a night's accommodation with buffet dinner and breakfast.

There was a cultural performance where guests were invited to reenact the comic scene saw earlier. The guest was sporty and invited lots of laughter from the audience.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel for travellers passing by Sōunkyō.

If you find yourself visiting Daisetsuzan National Park (大雪山国立公園) look up this large hotel. It is located in Sōunkyō (層雲峡) Gorge, site of the Kurodake Ropeway and the Sōunkyō Hyōbaku Festival. The festival is a celebration of ice sculptures and castles, lit up with colorful lights. Hotel Taisetsu is big - and can seem pretty impersonal especially when the big tour buses from all parts of Asia hit the hotel, flooding the onsen and dining halls with people. If you can afford the splurge, I definitely recommend the Yukihana suites on the 6th floor. You not only get a large set of Japanese style rooms with a private, beautiful onsen, you also get a private bathroom and shower, friendly, personal service, such as matcha tea and treats in your room, and wonderful multi-course dinners and breakfasts in a private room. There is a bunch of outdoor stuff available in the area, from snow-shoeing and skiing in the winter, to challenging hikes and biking in the summer. The staff is kind and friendly - the don't speak much english, but I got on just fine with the little bit of Japanese that I speak.

We stayed 1 night in this hotel and regret it so much ! Not because it was awful, but I wish I could stay longer !!! The hotel was exceptional ! The onsen, The Japanese Style Room, The view .. all outstanding. We went there on winter, so It enhanced the onsen experience It's 2hrs bus ride from Asahikawa station but there's a free shuttle bus that you can reserve. Only the timing it's a bit off, it leave Asahiakwa at 2PM - arrive at 4PM and leave Hotel at 10AM the next day. It's too early ! I wish they can leave hotel at 12PM though.

Another exceptional thing was Miki. She was really helpful to us. She answered all our queries patiently and even greeted us personally on our arrival to explain about the hotel. To sum it up, if you are looking for a place to stay and relax, look no more. This is the hotel you are looking for.

Room Tip: I don't know if it's still fit, but if you reserved the room facing the entrance, you may see the fireworks at 8.30PM like I did.

My partner and I just spent three very enjoyable days at the Hotel Taisetsu, which is located just above an older ski resort village in Sounkyo Canyon. The Japanese style rooms are large and attractive; be sure to ask for a room on the garden side of the hotel, as the rooms located above the parking lot can be noisy. We were initially given one of these parking lot rooms, but after one night, I requested to be moved to a quiet room, and the front desk courteously accommodated us. The Hotel itself is older, not recently renovated, but seems to be the best choice in the area, and is kept clean and tidy by the efficient staff. It is located just a short walk from the Mt. Kurodake Ropeway and chairlift, which gives hikers access to a wonderful climb up Mt. Kurodake. The food served at the hotel for breakfast and dinner has good variety, is generally fresh and simply prepared, with a good selection of vegetables. There are three onsens at the Hotel, and they are a wonderful feature of staying here! I would recommend Hotel Taisetsu for those wanting to explore this part of Daisetsuzan National Park by hiking and driving.
