Choyo Resort Hotel
Reviewed February 11, 2013

We were on a group tour so we can't compare the price value. The beds were comfortable and the separation of the toilet in a separate room from the bathroom sink and shower was very nice. The onsen was large, clean and comfortable. the shower in the room looked spacious compared to many Japanese hotels but we didn't use the room shower. We had dinner and breakfast in the hotel dining room. both were excellent in regards to choices and taste. The gift shop was quite large. There is a beautiful, tranquil sitting area for wifi access that looks out on a forest with a bird feeder that attracts a variety of birds. Despite being in a very rural area, wifi access was a very nice surprise. Our overall experience would make us choose this place again. There is free shuttle bus service to the Sounkyo Ice Festival site, which is a must see if you're in the area during this time.

Room Tip: non-smoking

I stayed at both Choyotei and Choyo Resort for one night and boarded the cable car up the Daisetsuzan during the daytime. The management provided excellent service by arranging bus to shuttle us between the hotels and pre-ordered lunch for us at the next hotel.

Food wise and room wise, Choyo Resort is a better choice than Choyotei. In the Resort, the buffet dinner provides the charcoal grilled live giant clam and and freshly-fried tempura.

But be flexible with your time. The free hotel bus ride from Sapporo to Choyo took us 6 hours (4 hours under normal condition) in a winter snowstorm. The hotel management apologized by offering the guest a drink coupon even though it is not their fault.

What we really liked most about this hotel was the super friendly and helpful staff. Other than that, the hotel itself was quite disappointing. Our room looked worn and the toilet was a bit cramped. The buffet dinners were really unsatisfactory - a great variety of food was offered but the taste was not commendable e.g. tasteless crab. Breakfast food was ok though. The onsen was disappointing as well, we had been to several onsen hotels before and had a feeling that this onsen might not be 100% natural judging from the odor & appearance of the water (we could be wrong though) - it felt more like bathing in hot water. In addition, we think the hotel should consider changing the style of the Japanese bathrobes it provides to something more appropriate for adult wear. These robes were the worst-looking robes we had ever come across in onsen hotels in Japan. Lastly, this hotel is one to avoid if you don't like tour groups.

This hotel is located in the Sounkyo Gorge, within Daisetsuzan National Park. It is about ten minutes walk from the foot of the ropeway leading up Mt. Kurodake.

This is a fairly new (1990), large resort hotel along a row of similar hotels. It is probably most easily visited by car, and there is a large, paved parking area, although the entrance is easy to miss.

Many of the clientele are tour groups who arrive by bus.

We were met outside by an over-eager, somewhat insincere, greeter who took charge of our luggage and took us to the check-in. The check-in itself was very impersonal and disinterested. We were not shown to our rooms or welcomed by a maid in the room as is customary in a ryokan, as this purports to be.

The lobby is large, well-equipped and comfortable. There is a fairly large souvenir store.

The rooms are Japanese-style, fairly small, and well-worn. They are also not very well-equipped. For instance, our room had no reading light nor any shower cap. The bathroom was very small, poorly lit and had no counter. There was a safe and a refrigerator in the room.

In addition to a yukata for sleeping, the hotel provides a truly hideous costume for wear within the building.

Rooms along the back of the hotel look out over Sounkyo Gorge and to the cliff beyond, where the trees were just beginning to change to autumn colours during our stay.

Rather than the typical ryokan supper served in the room, there was a Viking (buffet) supper in a dinning room. There are at least two dining rooms, one perhaps for large groups. Our room was bright, crowded, noisy and not very relaxing. There were a great number of dishes offered, Japanese, western and Chinese, but many dishes looked better than they tasted. The Japanese dishes were the best. The service was not very gracious.

The Viking breakfast the next morning was in the other dining room, and was much more successful. There was a wide selection of Japanese and western dishes, and a number of local dishes, all with very fresh ingredients.

We did not try the hotel’s public baths.

There are a number of hotels in Sounkyo Onsen. The Choyo Resort Hotel was not particularly good value.
