Thehotel is just a 5-10 minutes drive away from the sounkyo gorge. The exterior of the hotel looks simple but i personally thought the facilities are more than adequate. The convenience store is just 5 minutes away. Apparently, the hotel does has a old wing and new wing, and obviously the new wing looks better.

The onsen is located at basement one of the hotel and they actually has this couple's room for rental if you want some private times at the onsen with your loved ones or family. Do booked early though to avoid disappointments.

There is free wifi access at the lobby and there is actually a corner at the lobby for smokers where there is free beverages like coffee and water. Dinner and breakfast at level 2.

The dinner buffet is good enough and breakfast adequate. All in all, an above average onsen hotel.

Room tip: Try to get a room at the new wing

Make your reservation early to enjoy the early bird discount. Hotel provide free transport from / to Asahikawa. Which is convenient. However, if you are on tight schedule (and travel in winter), would recommend you arrange alternate , as the bus arrived about 3.30pm and leaving at 10am next morning, you might not have time to visit other attraction.
Seven -Eleven located within 5 mins walk.

Room is roomy, clean, neat and as with last reviewer, this is the best Japanese room that I stayed in so many onsens at similar price range in Japan.Dinner set was very good, whilst breakfast buffet is so so .. nothing to shout about.

Onsen varieties is okay .. 3 different locations, with 2 outdoor which are rather enclosed that you have only a small opening to see the outside.

Though the heavy snow prevented me to wander out of the hotel ..the room, the view, the dinner and onsen .. made my one day stay in Sounkyo.

We stayed here as part of our tour of Eastern Hokkaido. We had a Japanese style room in the annex, overlooking the creek. It had a luxurious bathroom and an ante-room. It was the nicest room of our two week stay in Japan. Staff had limited English, but a helpful "guide sheet" made our stay easy. The hotel has a shuttle bus to drop you at the local bus station for Kamikawa and is also a stop for the JR Twinkle Bus.

What blew us away, though, was our included dinner when booked through JTB. We had a private room with multiple courses of Japanese food, with a special meal provided for our child. Just couldn't believe it - I thought I'd booked a buffet so we were amazed.

The baths here were also very nice.

Wouldn't hesitate to stay here and recommend it to others.

Although the appearance of the hotel seems less appealing than newer hotels in the area, it is a good middle class ‘onsen’ hotel.
We stayed in the main building ‘Saika’ in August 2009 with two small children.
The room was clean, equipped with private bathtub and ‘washlet’-type toilet, with a nice view of the forest.
(We were given a room at the backside of the building and it was very quiet. We think it was better than front rooms because the hotel faces the main highway)
The room also has an empty fridge, so you can stock up with drinks and fruit you bring.
A Seven Eleven is conveniently located across the street.
The dinner buffet was also good, there were a variety of food (Japanese, Chinese, Western) and sweets to choose from, and they also cook tempura and beef steaks in front of you so that you can eat them fresh.
We could even see deer roaming around in the bush through the window while we ate.
Public bathrooms are large enough, but the open-air bathtub is not so appealing because it commands no view of the outside.
For information, we paid 8,130 yen (about US$85) per person including dinner and breakfast, our five-year-old son 3,150 yen, and one-year-old son was free of charge.
Overall we think it was very reasonable and good value.
