“Excellent residence”
Reviewed February 20, 2012

Just got back from a great week at Chantel 1 in a superior 2 bed apartment. This is the third P&V apartment we've stayed in, while the others were adequate this was a completely different experience. The apartment was excellent, lots of room and well fitted out. It was a duplex with lovely wooden sloping ceilings which added to the Alpine feel, the bedrooms were dark due to the 6 feet of snow on the rooflights but I'm certainly not going to complain about too much snow!
The pool was nice, the apartments are ski-in/out straight onto the Chantel blue piste, there is a ski hire shop / small restaurant which we didn't try plus a bar / pizza takeaway which we used several times which was very good.
Small downsides- free in-room WIFI was dire, could barely get a connection most of the time,
Not easy to access the village centre other than to ski / board down or catch a bus, not brilliant for food shopping (we drove so came prepared) and for the same reason would not be ideal for non-skiers or complete beginners.
All-in-all had a great time, 1800 is perfectly placed to explore all of Les Arcs easily over a week.

Room Tip: 2 bed superior (aslo called 'Espace') highly recommended

We stayed 2 weeks at Chantel 2 in mid Jan 2012 - perfect low season timing if you can take holidays then - the prices are at their lowest and you aren't sharing the facilities with hordes of others. Luckily our taxi driver waited while we checked if we had the right building as it would have been a long and cold bus + walking transfer if we had to move to Chantel 1 up the hill.

Our apartment was very comfortable, we were fortunate to be given a larger one than we had booked, with the only minor bugbear being that there was no oven, only a combined microwave/grill. We loved the bakery service that was offered - order the night before and collect your croissants, baguettes etc from reception at 8am the following day.

Being at the lower of the Chantel buildings we were only a 5 mins downhill stroll away from the 1800 Charvet shopping centre which had a well-stocked supermarket (with prices at a premium but well worth paying for the convenience), charcuterie, boulangerie, pizza takeaway etc. You then had the option of catching the bus back up the hill or doing a slightly longer stroll back up. We don't think you could have walked from Chantel 1.

Although difficult to find the first time (we should have asked before setting out) the ski-in route was really convenient and the ski storage facility was fine - though we kept our boots in the apartment as the lockers didn't have a drying capacity. We did try to go down to Bourg St Maurice to do shopping at the larger supermarkets, but they were closed on the Sunday afternoon when we went and not having a car meant we would have walked at least 2 km return to get back to the funicular railway.

We had arrived by rail from Paris - a fast TGV trip well recommended - and were very pleased that we had arranged for a taxi transfer up to Les Arcs (Euro 60) as going up via funicular railway + bus transfer would have involved alot of stairs and walking.

In our first week we shared the slopes with 2 British universities and there were big parties every night in 1800. Luckily Chantel 2 was high up so the sound didn't travel that far but our fellow ski school buddies who were staying closer to the village did complain about the noise.

Finally, we found the Reception staff to be very helpful and informative - and spoke English very well which was very handy for us Antipodeans!

We stayed at Le Refuge Montagnard in Les Arcs 1950. There were four of us in a chalet for 4-6 people. It was a great base for some great skiing. The accommodation was clean, well presented and spacious. The kitchen was well equipped although our chalet contained a dishwasher rather than an oven (other chalets contained an over rather than a dishwasher). Bedrooms were spacious and bathrooms were clean and tidy. The beds were super comfy. One bedroom had an ensuite bathroom with WC, the other bedroom contained a bathroom but had the WC was in a separate room. Our balcony looked out on to the Marmottes slope and the boot room went straight out on to the same slope - less than ten metres to walk in ski boots is a blessing. The resort was small but well equipped. A bakery was open from 7am and there is a well stocked Spar with a good choice of products (including ready roasted chickens). There was also a traitor where you could rent a raclette machine with cheese and meat for 14EUR per person. Would definitely recommend this accommodation as a good base to explore Les Arcs.

I am really angry with Pierre & Vacances for many reasons:

When I booked 4 months before I travelled, I wanted to be in Les Alpages 1 and to ensure that this happened I phone their office as soon as my booking was confirmed to request block 1 - this was apparently noted by their Paris Office. A week before departure I phoned Les Alpages 1 and had confirmation that our reservation was secure. On arrival at 9.00pm, we were told that our reservation had been given to someone arriving in the morning and that receptions in both blocks 1 and 2 had been swapping reservations. Their reason for this was people arriving early in block 2 realised that block 1 was a far nicer location, better spa facilities and nicer reception rooms. So as there was basically a free for all people were granted moves without authority from Paris head-quarters. When we confronted the manager about our inferior booking, she said that she took no notice of requests from head office as booking allocation was a local affair. To make matter worse, we were told that we would be moved up to Les Alpages 1 the next day as both receptions at 1 and 2 realised their mistake. However, the manager over turned this decision....

Our room was fine, it was clean but cold. On further inspection of the central heating system I found all the radiators full of air and had not been serviced in years. I resorted to bleeding these myself which fixed the problem.

The reception area in Les Alpages 2 was dirty, lights that had blown bulbs not changed despite reporting this to reception. The fireplace in main reception was never lit and was left with dirty ashes from last Xmas probably.

The Spa area was dirty, floors never washed, changing rooms (two in all), one permanetly locked - out of order and the other had not lighting, bullb blown. Reception were informed but just agreed with me that these rooms were unusable, nothing was done to resolve it.

On Thursday, two day before we left, we booked a taxi to take us to Bourg Saint Maurice at 6.00 am on Saturday. On Thursday night, the weather go bad so we tried to cancel our taxi as were leaving by Furnicular. The reception had no record of the taxi booking so they could not cancel. However, they promised to sort it out.... On Saturday morning I received an irrate phone call from the taxi driver asking about our where abouts. This was the last staw for me, I just could not wait to get home... a holiday from hell. Thank you PV for a rotten experience.

Just back from a week at Alpages de Chantel in Les Arcs 1800. Beautifully decorated apts with a fab resturant on site with the most welcoming staff. However the same could not be said about the only one pub on site which was next door. The town could only be reached by shuttle bus or on foot which made it difficult to go out on the town at night. The shuttle bus finished at 10 o'clock and was not very reliable. A taxi would cost €80 from the town to our apts. There was no lift to our apts so we had to climb 3 flights of stairs from the ski locker to our apts each evening. The bottle bank and bins were a 200m walk away. On the plus side the pool was fab, as was the reception area. Ski-in ski-out was great. All in all we won't be back. Les Arcs is a super ski area but Le Village in 1950 is a much better option.

Returned last weekend from a wonderful holiday in Les Arcs. 3m of snow and a week of sunshine :-)
We stayed at les alpages de chantel, a 5 star premium resort from pierre et vacances.

We were a bit weary when we heared the residence was owned by p&v, because mosty they rent typical french studio's which are mostly very small and spartan.

It is the very last location in arcs 1800. So when you arrive there it is still almost 3km to the residence. You benefit from this because i think it makes it the best situated residence in arcs 1800. The distance to the shops is too far to do on foot.

For our stay we had booked the 5/6 ppl classic appartment. The price was somewhat lower than other premium residences. But we experienced later on why...
We were just there as a couple, but we like to have enough room to move around. But: the appartment was incredibly small !. The maximum ppl who can live in there for a week is: a couple with 2 children.
The dinner table has only 4 places (bench and 2 chairs). The beds are rather small. there is a sofa for 3 ppl.

The appartment: the wooden finishing is nice and gives a 'luxuruous' atmosphere. But if you think that away, you have a rather small appartment (studio) with no more luxury than a standard french appartment ! The TV only had french channels (dont think that classifies under 'premium'), the internet was too small to be practical (not premium), on top of that you had to relog every 30 min! The day you arrive, you don't have access..

The ski lockers where in a dismal state and were not heated (not 'premium' in my book!)

As usual in france: everyone arrives at the same moment, that means: reception seriously understaffed at that time. Else, they were very friendly and helpful.

What is practical too: you have a skiset rental in the building, a bar and pizzeria where you can order pizza's which were not too expensive.

We didn't use the pool. so cant comment on that.

in short: well situated, price/quality is correct, but not at all premium quality. If you want to book there: book a much bigger room than you should do normally. If you are with 6 ppl: book a residence with 3 bedrooms or you will be in for a disappointement afterwards

Room Tip: We had B10 (suited for 2-4 ppl) and very close to the exit to the pistes.

Stayed for a week over new-year. Excellent skiing (but just enough snow at resort level) and excellet apartment. Particularily like the pedestrian only nature of the resort and good selsection of bars and restruants.

Only complaint is the swimming pools - each block doesn't have one (but you can walk through underground car-park if you don't want to venture outside) and they are too cold. Jacuzzis aren't much warmer either!
