Only stayed 1 night here. The room has all the basic necessity, neat and clean. However, the toilet has quite a strong stench of urine smell so we are not sure if the toilet is being cleaned properly or not. As the toilet and the shower/wash up area are separated, hence we didn't feedback to the staff since we only stayed one night. The friendly and warm staff/owner who went the extra mile to make us feel comfortable managed to compensate for the unpleasant smell. :)

Loved staying at Shimaya - their private Onsen overseeing the town is incredible, specially at night! Try the Japanese breakfast when you stay, totally worth it! And the great and kind hosts will give you the best tips on dining around town, as well as anything else you want to do.

This is an awesome Shimaya Ryokan that has the rooms in vintage and classic look. We are welcome warmly by Mr. Yumoto. Mr & Mrs Yumoto are very nice and accomodating hosts to their guests.

They even provided us the snow boots and took us to snow monkeys (great park) and picked us up after.

We highly recommend Shimaya Ryokan to stay in whenever you are in Yudanaka.

Thank you for your hospitality and will tell it to our friends and family!

Room tip: Best to have a room with your own toilet!

It was a beautiful and truly lovely stay at Shimaya Yudanaka. Mr Chiro & his wife was so hospitable, the rooms was very cosy and the traditional style of living was made extra special by them.
Mr Chiro arranged our private onsen which had a very pretty view and was so kind to drop us off at the Snow Monkey park and the train station. Do visit them and enjoy the stay just as we had.

Everyone comes to Yudanaka for its famous monkeys but a hidden treasure exists in the valley just below where the monkeys bathe. Shimaya is a place that everyone talks about and likes to remember but rarely seen anymore. A quiet and beautiful palace with staff to match. There is a chance in my life that I might forget the busy streets of Tokyo to the calm blue waters of Switzerland but I will not forget the this place. Staying here has made me feel at home, at peace even when I was several thousand miles away from it and months away traveling abroad.
