We stayed in a number of ryokans during our stay in Japan, and we all agree that the best ryokan experience was at the Shimaya with the Yamoto family. The accomodation was basic in comparison to other ryokans we had visited, but very clean and had everything that you needed. What singled this place out was the care and attention given to us by the family. We felt so welcome. They have a huge amount of local knowledge, they are full of recommendations of places to visit, eat, and experience, and can always tell you how to get there. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Mr Yamoto gave us a lift to the Snow Monkey park, and then picked us up again later which was an unexpected kindness. The location of the hotel is good, close to the station, and there are local bars and restaurants within strolling distance. Highly recommended if you want to see the snow monkeys and need a good value and friendly place to stay .

Thank you very much for staying with us and for writing a review. We are happy when you enjoy staying with us. The Shmaya family hopes to continue offering comfortable lodging for visitors to Japan for long time.
We look forward to having you and your family

We stayed at Shimaya Ryokan for one night to visit the snow monkey park. We received the best service experienced during our total holiday. Mr. Ichiro Yumoto drove us to the park and picked us up later on. He provided us with boots and in the meantime dried our wet shoes. We enjoyed our excellent meals at the ryokan. And when our daughter left a pair of shoes behind, he sent it to our home. Thank you Mr Yumoto (and family) for this great service.

This was the highlight of our holiday, we went to Yudanaka for the Snow monkeys and discovered the best family run hotel in Japan. We had the real Japanese experience, amazing food and the best service you could hope for. Nothing was any trouble, the room was perfect and we had a great night at the town festival with all the locals. The trip up the mountain to the monkeys was definitely worth it and I would recommend this hotel stopover to anyone visiting Japan and the snow monkeys, you won't regret it. Thank you for making us so welcome.

Room tip: We had an en-suite but there is a spa bath available free. All rooms are quiet as it is a quiet area.

We stayed here to visit the Snow Monkeys and Shibu Onsen Spa town, the accommodation is basic but all that you need. Food was great and the owner really does go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable. He's a wealth of knowledge on the area and even dropped us off at the park! We walked back from the park via Shibu spa town, you can walk around the town and collect stamps on a towel, visiting all nine Onsets which is great fun and a great way to explore the town.

Room tip: A traditional Ryokan, basic accommodation but excellent location

This is an intriguing little ryokan. It is not luxurious but a wonderful place to stay. The owner hosts are very helpful and will drive you to the Snow Monkey Park (and collect if you wish), although we walked back. They will also offer advice on what else to do in the area. Obuse is well worth a visit, in particular we recommend the Hokusai museum and the chestnut icecream! The reception area of the ryokan is cluttered by Japanese standards but the place is spotless. The onsen area is lovely (water rather too hot, though) and the food is delicious. The only negative was the smell from the drains.
