I usually don’t write hotel reviews but they deserve this!

We arrived late and were very warmly welcomed by the hosts! They are wonderful in every way -- drove us to Snow Monkey Park, to the post office to access an ATM, brought our luggage to a café near Yudanaka Station: Café Miyako – nice lady, coffee, cocoa, toast, cake by the way! They even let us borrow winter boots, THANK YOU!!! It was 40cm of snow fall that day. Awesome breakfast spread! The room is traditional & clean with yukatas for us to wear. We felt completely at home.
Will definitely stay here again, THANK YOU!

Nice traditional Ryokan in the center of Yamanouchi. Excellent starting point for a circle walking tour of the town's onsens, shops, alleyways, and shrines, along with a diversion over the river to the sake brewery. Friendly, kind, calm owners provide discreet service, even as they provide tutorials to those guests new to the Ryokan concept. Complimentary morning shuttle to the Monkey Park, if desired, with self-sponsored return. Many foreign guests, with the level of service adjusted accordingly. Good English spoken. Cash only. Shuttle to/from train station during check-in/out hours.

Great, authentic accommodation. Even better were the staff who arranged transport from the train station, suggested we try the local onsen as we had arrived late in the afternoon and the snow monkeys that we'd come to see would have gone back up the mountain for the evening and the staff helped us find food that catered for a food allergy.

Our stay started off with a pick-up at the train station in Yamanouchi by Tommy, very courteous and pleasant. Did not take long to get to our Ryokan, into our formal attire, Yukatas, and strip naked!! No, seriously, you can't by shy when expecting to enjoy the hot springs. However, for us, we lucked out because there was only one other couple and they were gone for the day leaving us the Ryokan's private onsen to ourselves. It is hot...really hot. They warn you but you will have to experience it yourself to understand what they actually mean. Do not be afraid to be liberal with the cold water.

Aside from the onsen experience which was relaxing and unique. The food our first night was amazing. Essentially everything that was on the menu was served and all was delicious. What was even better, was the hospitality displayed during our service, Kay, Tommy's wife, explaining why some of the dishes were being served and also providing us locally picked vegetables. They also gave us a private dining area upstairs all to ourselves. Breakfast was also very good, this time though in a communal dining area. Service again, excellent.

This Ryokan is located in the Shibu Onsen part of Yamanouchi town and aside from the cars, you feel like you are back in time. An amazing experience, wonderful people, and delicious food made this a great side trip from Tokyo.

Good ryokan with very nice owners, they are so helpful (free lift to the snow monkeys; they pick you up from the train station when you arrive). The breakfast is fantastic, you should taste it! The town (shibu onsen) has 9 different onsen (public bath) and you can do the onsen tour while you are wearing a yukata, really good experience! They ryokan has a traditional onsen also (one for men and another one for women). Nice town with good restaurants to eat soba and relax.

The town has also a local brewery, go there and drink almost one!

I will repeat this ryokan for sure!

Room tip: Big and clean romos. Clean bathroom.
