If you are heading for the snow monkeys or a ski/snowboarding trip close to Yudanaka, then I could highly recommend this ryokan. Located very close to the train/bus/taxi station and there is a convenience store nearby. Staff was very friendly and tried to keep your stay as comfortable as possible.
I was traveling by myself mid-March 2012. The room (traditional Japanese with tatami) was large and had everything one could need. Refrigerator, kotatsu, heater, tv. Their own spa (indoor apple bath and outdoor rotenburo) makes it worthwhile to stay an extra evening just to come at rest.
Rooms are clean, communal area's as well and towels and yukata are refreshed daily. Maps and brochures are available in the ryokan.
Extra note for those traveling with a JR Pass: the Nagano Dentetsu line that takes you from Nagano Station to Yudanaka Station is NOT operated by JR so take this into account if want to use Yudanaka as base for daytrips.
