“Typical village church”
Review of Uplyme Church

Uplyme Church

There is a lovely walk from Lyme Regis to Uplyme. When you reach Uplyme you can turn right to the church or left to the pub. We did both. A nice little church which has suffered some modernisation. Well worth a look.

Uplyme was a small farming community when I used to walk from Rocombe to Mrs Ethelston's Church Primary School with it's three rooms.
We did have school milk and a full cooked lunch though. Dreary wartime days, then., I watched the Coronation shown by Graham Newberry on a monochrome (12 inch?) screen strapped to a central pillar - the church was packed!
These days are coloured by the spring, the prosperity and comparative ease which is evident. The beautiful blue ceiling in the church remains a joy. It gladdens me to see new interior, though I have heard your misgivings at the cost. Still, enjoy it.

The Church is pretty old, but inside it has been nicely modernised with modern, more comfortable seating. We liked this. Some may prefer the old pews, but this has brought it up to date, and we found it very welcoming & warm.

The village church has turned from a sweet traditional church to a utilitarian. With red covered conference chairs and most of the traditional we know and love about a C of E Church in this part of the world has gone. I feel this space is now a extension of the Village hall not a place of quiet contemplation. If you were thinking of planning your wedding at this church you may be advised to look before you book. Very Sad.
