Checked in and everything was lovely, our rooms were in the garden rooms, which we knew resembled a prison block and it did ! The public areas of the garden rooms were decorated in 1970s theme but clean, but worryingly had an overwhelming cherry smell, which we wondered was masking another smell (the rooms didnt smell like it though).
Our room was nicely decorated, lovely king size bed clean with a lovely view of the grounds. Then i tried to take a shower ..... which was almost impossible, hot water was sparse and the water pressure was practically non existant, so we called reception, a man turned up and said oh dear lets see if you can be moved. An hour later we called reception as we'd heard nothing (bearing in mind it was 6.30pm and we wanted to honour our dinner reservation) so we both struggled to shower with a dribble of water! We were then told at 7.10 that another room was availble on the lower floor and that our luggage would be moved whilst we was at dinner which it was. Again second room was very similar to first room decor wise, except we no longer had a king size bed, just a standard double.
During the afternoon we had used the spa facilities which were lovely and clean, very small changing facilities which can imagine when the hotel is at full capacity would be hard work, but as we had a sunday special deal the hotel didnt appear to be very busy (even though reception said they would nearly full) !
We went to the bar before dinner, the main hotel is lovely, lots of corridors to weave through but all very pleasant. Had a pre dinner drink, then went into main restaurant, If you book a dinner bed and breakfast deal make sure you tell them before your seated otherwise they give you the wrong menu! Service was ok, our waitress was very pleasant but we had to wait ages for drinks, again the restaurant was a quarter full yet service was slow. Food was ok, not great, but ok, for the money we paid we were happy, but again we had to cross out the food when we were asked to sign the bill, as he had prepaid before hand. Consistency is a miss in the restaurant, hit or miss whether you were offered a bread roll, dishes came out looking different on different tables.
Went back to our second room. The noise in the corridor was almost like our door was open from 7am the next morning, and the noise above was quite loud, a lay in was not possible due to the noise! Again our shower was useless .... can only describe as a slightly faster dribble than our first room but the hot water was consistant! Windows were absolutely saturated with condensation the next morning, so you can imagine the state of the window seals, bit mouldy (and that was in both rooms)!
Breakfast was ok, tired and tatty cereal boxes were on display, why, not quite sure! Again we were asked to sign for breakfast to be charged to our room, to be told it wasnt on the system!
The maid was knocking and trying to enter our room from 9.30am (10am check out but was told by reception it was 11am). She didnt just knock, she entered the room which i dont agree with!
We handed our keys to reception on our departure and i was hoping she would ask if everything was ok with our stay, she didnt, so i didnt express our concerns.
It was a relatively cheap night, but in hindsight we wished we had booked a premier inn and eaten at a beafeater for the same money. The advantage milton house had was the pool area, but wouldnt bother next time. Hence, the title and the 2 star rating!
