“Sunday meal”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

four of us decided to try this establishment on 14/7 whilst out for drive to Newton Ferrers.Three had the roast chicken and one the hunters chicken followed by three jam puddingds with custard. The whole meal was excellent, tasty with ample portions and the owner (a young couple) could not be more helpful. When i settled the bill it came to an astonishing £26 which works out at about £6 each which i could not believe.Well recommended if your in the area.

“Traditional English Pub”
Reviewed July 13, 2013

This traditional Public house in the Village of Yealmpton offer two real ales, normally Courage best and one other, Otter or Doombar.
Food menu consists of Hunters Chickens, Lasagna, Pasta, Beef & Onion pies, excellent Fish and Chips and a good Roast dinner on a Sundays.
The bar side has a pool table and darts board, while the lounge is clean and tidy with a large wood burner for the winter months.
The Volunteer is dog friendly with dog biscuits being kept behind the bar, as my Lab is all too aware.
There is a very large garden at the rear, which will be a great place to visit once it has been restored.

“Excellent pub food do not be put off by the exterior of the pub!”
Reviewed May 31, 2013

This has the appearance of a "locals pub" but we were very pleasantly suprised by the quality and value of the food. The landlord and landlady are new and are working very hard to build up the trade here. The menu was limited but all four of us in the group ate different meals (including one very fussy veggie) and the food was very good indeed. The cost was extremely good value, like pub meals used to be. I would definately reccomend this pub for value and quality.

“Great food”
Reviewed May 3, 2013

I took my partner here last week for a change and while a little apprehensive having not been there for several years and a change of landlord, this was totally unfounded.
The food was excellent, better than I've had in many expensive restaurants.
The landlord was friendly, the service good and the price amazed us £22 for 2 main courses 1 desert and 3 drinks.
While the menu is not vast I'd rather that and good quality and portions, the steak and ale pie gets my vote!
If you want a good meal in a genuine country pub then look no further.

“A Nice Little Gem”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

We have visited twice in the last two months. The new owners have on both occasions been very welcoming and we received a friendly personal service The food has been excellent. Fairly minimal menu but what they do has been very good indeed particularly at the price. We had two pies this weekend, two pints and two wines and walked away having paid £25.00 (plus left a tip).
Makes a good alternative from the Rose and Crown up the road which is good but you are anonymous and we have found recently rushed food as they fill tables..............give the Volunteer a try........
