Royal Kruger Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 21, 2012

"From the moment we arrived at Royal Kruger Lodge when we were handed a cool flannel to freshen up with and fresh juice right up with until the moment we left with a week full of incredible memories, we were treated exceptionally by all the staff and made to feel right at home. The game drives were superb and Gavin's expert knowledge made learning about the wildlife in Krugar National Park awe-inspiring. We saw loads of animals and birds, had some exciting close-encounters with lions, elephants, monkeys and giraffe and also enjoyed spending time just sitting in our car on a self-drive in the park just taking in the vastness of the surroundings. We were also really pleased to get the chance to feed the zebras which came to the lodge one afternoon, again a truly unique experience. Julia (the head chef) also really knows how to treat her guests and made us feel particularly welcome throughout our stay. It was great chatting with her and we enjoyed sharing stories and finding out about how life is lived in the bush. Her cooking was absolutely exceptional and having a 4 course meal every night was a real treat for us especially during the times when it was served in the boma. It was romantic, wild and breath-taking all at the same time. Her desserts which are her own recipes were also especially tasty! A big thanks to Gavin, Julia and Irene who made our stay at the lodge a truly unique experience. We haven't stopped telling people about it!"

We did a 3 night stay at the Royal Kruger Lodge in Jan 2012 and had an amazing time there. The general manager of the lodge is very hospitable and knowledgeable about the various animals and birds that roam the area. The boma dinners were 4 course meals and wow the chef prepares a succulent lamb shank. One of the best I have ever tasted. I really think its the staff that make the place what it is. I cant wait to go back for another stay.

Room Tip: Leopard room has a nice big corner bath tub.

A direct thanks to Gavin who made our stay so memorable and forever lasting.

We absolutely love Royal Kruger - from the comfortable accommodations, the delicious food to the amazing animal encounters.

We were told that if we were lucky that we would get to see some animals up close but never imagined that they would actually walk up to us at out game lodge!

Overall, was just an amazing experience.

This was a truly superb experience. It was a special weekend away and Gavin could not have been more accommodating along with the rest of the lodge staff. It is so seldom that you get treated like royalty in this world and this was the one time when honestly NOTHING was too much trouble from the early morning wake up calls to head into the Kruger to arranging a special birthday hot stone therapy massage.
Thank you to Vic (the one owner) for appointing Gavin to run his lodge as it was his own, how refreshing to be spoilt 24hrs a day. We will be back and we will recommend this lodge to anyone.

This is a truly special safari experience. I can honestly say that it exceeded all expectations. It's not just the intimate atmosphere of a small, friendly lodge that allows the guests to bond by the outdoor fire at dusk as the first night's four-course dinner appears effortlessly and the next day's dawn drive is planned with Gavin and Verena. It's not just the anticipation of seeing the big five as Gavin's bush vehicle heads to the very front of the queue at the Kruger gate at dawn, and we sit hushed with cosy blankets on our knees, stuffed with Julia's muffins and tea, eager and a bit nervous. Will we see anything? Will we be safe? Within minutes, there's a female lion training her daughter, adolescent giraffes lanking and dipping by the vehicle, and -wow- a sumptuous leopard padding purposefully right across our path, inches from us. And it just goes on getting better, with elephants, rhino, kudu, impala, birds of all descriptions, cheeky warthogs.
Where is the special magic of the Royal Kruger experience? It's not just the utter quiet of the bush in the afternoon, with the daft 'go away' bird calling; or the gentle voice of Julia announcing the evening menu (always with a surprise pudding), or the evening drives by Crocodile River with G &T sundowners and unaffected kindness from the attentive and knowledgeable Verena, jokes and lightly-worn expertise from Gavin. It's a combination of everything. You want to have a guided bush walk on foot in the morning for a change? Gavin arranges it at the drop of a hat, at a time to suit us. We have the privilege of two and a half hours in Rick's company, seeing birds and plants up close, stumbling on a herd of zebras, tracking giraffe prints, gathering discarded feathers, laughing and relaxing at our own pace.
Why Marloth? We chose The Royal Kruger in Marloth Park for a three-night stay as the conservancy adjoins Kruger, making access pretty quick for dawn and night drives, while also allowing for safe rambles: the big predators are inside the park while Marloth is unique in its abundant wild life. Also, as we flew up to Nelspruit, then hired a car, we wanted fairly rapid journey times, and it took only about an hour from the airport, mostly easy roads. Our room was very comfortable, with a huge corner bath in the bathroom. Julia's cooking was delicious every night and her gentle hospitality added to the sense of welcome. Gavin arranged our game requests effortlessly and proved an excellent guide; Verena's friendly smiles light up the room. The special atmosphere comes from these two, I think. They made a dream stay for us and we are very grateful.
