Owner description: Donelda's Puffin Boat Tours is one of the 100 Must-See Destinations in Unforgettable Atlantic Canada! On the 2 1/2 - 3 hour boat tour you'll be amazed at the beautiful rock formations on the way to the Islands , a stop to look at an old sea cave as well as a stop or two to feed some Bald Eagles. The Bird Islands are home to Grey Seals, Bald Eagles ,Atlantic Puffins and other sea birds. Our vessel, Highland Lass has all removable windows down both sides (refit 2012) for easy viewing and taking pictures from the comfort of your seat. Our tour spends over an hour at the Islands viewing birds (more if necessary) this does not include the time spent feeding Bald Eagles on the way to and from the Islands or stopping for anything else of interest, whales dolphins, gannets etc. The tour is offered in English , however there are written transcripts ( limited numbers of each ) of the whole tour available on the boat in English, French and German to make your experience more enjoyable. Please note that tours can be cancelled due to unsafe sailing conditions.

A rainy day, and too late to see puffins - you would think that would mean a disappointing trip. But you would be wrong. We saw dramatic granite cliffs, caves and rock formations, bald eagles swooping, seals circling the boat, cormorants drying their wings in the wind, and we smelled the fresh sea air. The rugged coast and windswept islands are magnificent. Donelda and her husband are friendly and knowledgeable about the wildlife and history of the region and they made this trip a real highlight of our vacation. Worth every penny.

This tour was a real highlight of my vacation. Sadly, the season for puffins was mostly finished this year (they were gone earlier than normal) but even with only spotting a few puffins the tour was great. We saw many, many seals, birds and bald eagles. They'll even feed the bald eagles so you can watch them dive down to get the fish from the water! I enjoyed the trip so much I plan on going back as soon as I can to see more puffins!

Very knowledgeable commentary. Experienced captain. Plenty of time spent at the Islands to view the birds. They were truthful about our chances of seeing Puffins, which are now scarce as most of them have gone to sea. We did see four birds swimming and the captain was able to get close enough for us to take good photos with simple digital cameras. They also feed a bald eagle which swoops down close to the boat. The boat is covered for inclement weather.

As this was my first time going on a bird watching ( or any type of ocean going) tour i really don't know what is "normal " for this type of thing, however if they are all like this one I definitely need to do more. The tour was amazing!! We saw lots of birds : mainly Eagles , cormorants, blue herons , and a few puffins (we went in August which is kind of late for puffins). Donelda seemed very to know a lot about the birds and the islands we visited. Her talk was informative but not so long as to have you sleeping in your seat. As a newbie to this I highly recommend it to everybody and hope to be able to do this tour another year; but earlier in the summer to hopefully see more puffins. An added BONUS was the number of seals we saw. All in all just an amazing tour thanks to Donelda and her husband John.

Donelda and her husband have been doing this long enough that there are several Bald Eagles that come to her boat to get mackerl. They hear the engine coming out of the harbor and if the Ferry holds them up the eagles have been know to be flying down the inlet looking for the boat. The birds out at the Bird Islands were great. We had a small group on the boat and Donelda went around to all making sure they saw was all the nesting Eagles, Puffins, Cormorrants, etc. At first Doneld's talk was a little canned but when we got to the birds her passion was so obvious, she loves the birds!
