Montania Special Class Hotel

We stayed here for a one night getaway en route to Istanbul and I was genuinely looking forward to it.

However, upon check in we were met by staff who werent exactly welcoming and then got marched across the road to the annex hotel: something we were both surprised and upset about.

The impression I had was we were to be in the main building which has a fantastic view across the sea and is wonderfully decorated.

The annex rooms were big but in dire need of a renovation: the place looked dirty and tired actually.

Restaurant: superb if you eat there. Beautiful view but my advice is eat outside and drink at the bar: same view and not far from the hotel are some great local seafood restaurants

Breakfast was excellent. As always in Turkish hotels: plenty of variety and and fresh food.

Pool area: not great. The pool was freezing and we had to go ask for towels.

Did not even bother looking at the fitness room: it was again in the annex which resembled a 2 star lodging and NOT a hotel.

Take note: make sure and get the rooms in the main building.

Staff were ok: bell boys were helpful but no one spoke English well except the restaurant host whose English was decent.

Overall disappointed as I had always seen this as a nice hotel. There are better, cheaper alternatives in Mudanya trust me.

I was a little bit confused , because the hotel i not rated with stars , but it has a special category.
That was true as this was an old railway station . The hotel and the room have nothing special , furniture is old , small Tvs , room on the top have only a very small window , and there is no light on the ground floor. Personell was rather helpful . Despite average sleeping condition , the bar and the restaurant is in the old building , with terace near the see . The experience of having breakfast near a quiet see in the morning makes you forget all other experiences.

Room Tip: Get a room on the fist floor

If you can persuade reception to give you a room in the main hotel on the waterfront the view is splendid, only feet away from the sea. But juxtapose this with worn out carpets in public areas, and in the rooms rather shabby furnishings and fittings. The shower cubicle was so small I banged my elbows on the walls while attempting to shower and a door that didn't fit the cubicle properly saw water leaking across the bathroom floor. This hotel could be a gem given its historical building and location but it is seriously lacking in finesse. After reading reviews, we pushed the desk clerk at reception to give us a room in the main building on the waterfront so we could have a seaview. This was given, grudgingly and I can't figure out what the problem was. Why not put people in the best view rooms? We considered the restaurant but didn't stay after looking at the menu. So little Turkish food on it we could have been anywhere. All in all a disappointing experience and not value for money.

Room Tip: As others have noted, ask for a seaview room.

As previous reviewers have mentioned, Hotel Montana is located within a renovated old train station set literally feet from the Marmara seafront. It is a property with huge potential to be a real gem but it just comes up short which is rather frustrating because it does get some things right.

The lobby is quite nice and the bar and restaurant downstairs are very large but nicely appointed. Upon entering and looking around you get the impression you are in for a treat but then you start to see the little things (tatty carpet on the stairs, cracks in the marble flooring, etc that presumably could be easily fixed). The rooms too are a disappointment - quite dark, with very thin walls so the noise is something of an issue. In fact at night while trying to sleep we could hear music from outside, tv from the room next door, and conversation from the guests in other rooms. Our room was also permeated with the smell of cigarette smoke. As a non-smoker this is not pleasant.

We arrived here by car and upon pulling up the bellboy was very good and fast and he immediately removed our bags from the car but he headed right away to the building across the street and not the railway building it is supposed to be known for. Having read previous reviewers speak of seaside rooms I immediately walked into the railway building where there was reception and asked for a sea view room not a room on the street in the back. They were very accommodating and a sea view room was quickly given but I cannot understand why they would so automatically want to give us the bad rooms when there were so many sea view rooms available? From what we could gather the hotel was less than half full as it was mid-week and still cold outside so not quite in season yet. One would think you would want to put your best foot forward for international travelers if you possibly can?

There is a restaurant as noted but it is very large - not sure if they are full in the summertime with Turkish travelers coming from Istanbul but it looks like it could seat a hundred people with ease inside and another 50 or more outside. We chose to go elsewhere as the menu was one of those that featured everything from fajitas to falafel to spaghetti bolognese and in my experience that kind of choice rarely ends well.

We also thought it a shame not to eat fresh fish right next to the sea so we ended up going back to a place where we had stopped for Turksh tea in the afternoon and which looked very popular with the local population. The place is not far along the seafront promenade and is named Abla'nin Yeri (a few buildings down from the hospital). I am very happy we did because dinner was lovely - fresh grilled seabass for my partner, fresh grilled sea bream for me, fresh calamari and a big salad of lettuce and carrots and red cabbage and onions, more Turkish tea. They do not serve alcohol or beer. They speak very limited English but enough to tell you what is fresh on the menu that day - a great spot and I would be happy to go again. And their prices were more than fair - roughly US$25 in total.

Breakfast was quite nice and I cannot fault it there. But to be honest this hotel could be really something special but they have not taken the steps they need to to achieve that. We were also disappointed as we were told, first, that the hotel hammam, which is supposed to be very good, was available for us to make an appointment then suddenly were told it was actually closed. Never figured what was going on there but we had been looking forward to it for a couple days as we both love the whole hammam experience.

Room Tip: Even when they want to walk you to the reception in the back building keep walking right up to the r...

We had a wonderful weekend in this lovely town, Mudanya! It was amazing to be in a historical place. Because the Hotel Montania was orginally an old train station. But now, they restorated and created such a beautiful hotel at the sea side... The original railway is standing in the corridor of the hotel with special lights and you walk on this glass... It is amazing to feel that this historical ambience. Once upon a time, people/passengers and trains passed in this station... And you have a wonderful dinner in the old station, even they call it, "La Gare"... Has a wonderful cuisine... The room, which has a wonderful sea view... Looking at the Mudanya Bay and also the snowy mountains... I watched the sunrise and the sea... and the seagulls... It was one of unforgetable moments in my life. Hotel personal are all so nice and have a smiling face... You don't feel that you are in the hotel... Like a home...
We will come back again... Especially we wonder during spring and summer time too... But of course in these days has a wonderful silent of winter days... and we miss this peaceful silent, especially for us who live in Istanbul...If you wish you can find all photographs in my blog http://photographyofnia.com/
