“Exceptional place to stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2013

Stayed at The Battlesteads for a birthday treat and it really was lovely. Outside of the main restaurant in the garden was well kept and was an enjoyable place to sit whilst waiting for our meal. The meal was excellent, cannot fault it at all, arrived quickly and was well presented with a variety of sides. We stayed in room 1, which is one of the smaller rooms, however did not take away from how clean and comfortable everything was for us, really homely decorated and a real pleasure to stay in and we would ask for this room again! Breakfast was also a delight. Staff where friendly and accommodating and we'll be back soon! Thank you for such a pleasant stay.

Restaurant
We stayed here in july for one night. We booked a table in the restaurant and had a 2 course meal. From the point of ordering to the main course arriving was 25 minutes (Really!). I would have been a little happier if the chef had not blamed it on us for not telling the staff we wanted to have a break between meals. I am a project manager and i have no idea how to run a restaurant so it would not cross my mind to advise them how to pace a meal. Anyway, the food quality was ok but for somewhere that grows its own food, there was a shocking lack of veg.

Room
The room was a double, number 1. It was approximately 10 foot square with a very small double bed. When my partner rolled over i felt every movement. Also the noise from the road was really bad, for most of the night. They did have nice coffee in the room and fruit.

The bathroom
Shower only, very basic. There was fungi on the silica, bathroom needed a refresh. The shower was ok, not very powerful but for me, that is fine.

Overall
I am surprised at the five star reviews on trip advisor, even without the faster than macdonalds food i would have rated this three stars. We did get a small refund for my own meal, but nothing to compensate for a ruined evening.

Room Tip: Ask for a garden room

This is a great place to stay in Northumberland. Everything about it is outstanding, from the friendliness of the staff, the high-quality food and the situation. It is faultless. We decided to stay here again in order to visit the Lindisfarne Gospels exhibition in Durham and to see the progress on the restoration of Seaton Delaval Hall. Durham is only 55 minutes away with easy access to the park and ride, and Belsay Castle and Seaton are no distance at all. It's a great spot, with wonderful countryside all round.
We shall certainly return.

stayed for one night, which we booked on the internet. We had read the previous reviews and were not disappointed. The room was lovely, with a large bathroom complete with spa bath. On arrival we sat in the lovely garden with a couple of cold drinks and our books and completly chilled out. But its the food which makes this place. A wonderful evening meal, followed the next morning with a great breakfast. Will certainly return.

Room Tip: front rooms can be noisy in the early morning if you leave the windows open.

My wife and I used the Battlesteads as a base for a three day tour of Northumbria. It was a great place to stay. The staff were friendly and helpful and our room clean and a decent size. We ate in on the first night and the food was wonderful with most ingredients sourced locally or produced on site. Breakfast was excellent. As a joke I asked for Somerset Cider and was presented with a pint of Thatchers Gold. Perfect

Ours was a last minute booking through booking.com on the Friday before the stay on the Saturday.

The hotel is lovely, clean and tidy and the greeting at reception was warm. We were even shown to our rooms and facilities pointed out, which is a rare thing these days even in the expensive hotels.

The staff are friendly and well trained. The food is excellent and the waiter/waitress described each dish as it was served.

The hotel is Eco friendly and uses wood chips for its Eco burner to heat the hotel and provide hot water. Veg is grown on site and locally sourced produce is also used. Eco friendly bathroom products are also supplied from the Lake District. All good stuff!

I would definitely recommend this hotel. Its in a lovely part of the UK and we really enjoyed our short stay. Would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Ask for a garden facing room - the road is a little noisy.

My husband and I spent a wonderful 2 day mini-break at this charming country inn, which is situated in a pretty village in a picturesque part of Northumberland. We were welcomed by the front of house Manager, Mike, who made us feel most welcome and said we had been upgraded to the hotel suite as it was not in use at the moment. This turned out to be a pleasant corner room with comfortable bed, settee and coffee table, and a lovely bathroom complete with a jacuzzi bath and separate shower. The cosy olde worlde bar is a great meeting place for residents and locals alike, and we spent a long time chatting to Americans and Norwegians who were also staying in the Hotel. The food is first class and we thoroughly recommend dining in the Restaurant.
The Hotel is run by Richard and Dee, a charming couple, who throw themselves wholeheartedly into making sure that your stay is pleasant and memorable. Their daughter, Kate, manages the market garden side of the business at the rear of the Hotel, which grows all the vegetables, salads and herbs used in the Hotel restaurant. Do pop around the back of the Hotel and visit the polytunnels and see this for yourself.
Overall we could not fault this Hotel and its facilities - there is even a hotel cat who comes and goes as he pleases!. I should just mention one more point: the bridge across the River is closed for renovation at the moment and will be so for another few months. If you see any yellow Diversion signs on your way to the Hotel, do follow them. We did not and ended up having to take a 14 mile detour, even though we could see the village of Wark on the other side of the bridge!
Thank you Richard, Dee and Mike for making our short visit so pleasant.
