Hi, as Niseko regulars of 7 years, we discovered Rusutsu closeby in 2013. Just visited again for the day in January, 2014. Well, all I can say is perfection. The runs are for borders or skiers..something for everyone. Off into the powder and the trees, and end up at a lift. Beautifully groomed for skiers and powder galore for borders. We usually get a taxi from Niseko Grand Hirafu or Ski Japan can organize for you. We really need some good apartment self contained accomodation in the area with a shuttle (take note developers from Grand Hirafu). We will start the pub.

If you like the powder, this is your place! Based on the reviews, year over year, the powder is very consistently here. This trip was no exception. Other places I've boarded are Whistler, Sunshine Valley and Lake Louise in Banff, Canada, several resorts around Lake Tahoe, California, Big Bear, California, many of the resorts in Washington state, Crested Butte in Colorado, and White Tail in Pennsylvania. Of those, I would say this is most comparable (from the snowboarding side of the house) to Mt. Baker in Washington. Very, very deep powder, some groomers, some ungroomed. Not the best black diamonds, but several great intermediates. There are three mountains included on your pass. They are all easily accessible via gondola. Of the chair lifts I have done, they were all easy on and off. Many detachable quads. Very easy grades on the lift exits. Warning to snowboarders--most of the greens are very flat. The powder is so thick that I have done several blacks without difficulty. This is a great family resort! The hotel (which I reviewed separately) has excellent family appeal with a carousel, swimming pool, singing bears (ala Country Bear Jamboree) and food choices for every taste. This resort was at the perfect level for me, but more advanced skiers who have done Whistler and the big Colorado resorts or European resorts might be disappointed by the lack of real challenge or the short length of the runs. That being said, you are not going to see the same kind of crowds here you see everywhere else. I loved it and hope to bring some friends here in the future!

Rutsutsu benefits from the great snow of the more well-known Niseko, but without the crowds. It certainly doesn't have the sophistication of Niseko, or the range of apres-ski, but if you love down-to-earth resorts with pristinely groomed runs which are virtually empty, then this really is the place to go. Good hire equipment, although it is pricey as there is no real competition.

We ski in Hokkaido nearly every year in the past decade. We went for Rusutsu in the last 3 years because we love here. One of the biggest resorts in Hokkaido, facilities are excellent. The chair-lifts and gondolas wait for you instead of you queue up to ride. There are enough of English speaking staff around helping non-Japanese speaking skiers. With increasing numbers of international ski instructors, it's great for expat families with young kids learning to ski. Very soon, they will cruise along-side (or even racing pass you) exploring the beautiful trails. The best trails are the furthest eastern side of Mt Isola, the Heavenly Trails. The long and straight Steamboat B will put you up with "Fast & Furious".

The attached hotel is grand and luxury with excellent restaurants and services. You could also find a few small hotels/lodges (a short distance from the lift base) with friendly hosts on very reasonable tariff. And a few local restaurants with great food and light on your wallets!

I went to this ski resort during March 2013. As I'm from a tropical country which has sunshine throughout the whole year, this place really seems fantastic and beautiful to me. The resort is really big whereby it has a few restaurants, few shopping places, cafes, children playground, hot spring and even amusement park during summer. The restaurants here offer variety of food which ranges from fine cuisine to buffet. But be early for the meals as during peak season one may have to queue for at least 20 minutes just to get a seat especially in the buffet restaurant. This resort is also known for it's Powderly snow that's perfect for skiing and other snow activities. Just make sure you stay at least 3 nights to enjoy everything this resort can offer.
