“Great blue Gem”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

Totally worth to see it. If we have a car, we would stay there for half day and come back at night to view the star. Too bad the shuttle only give us 30 mins.

“Splendid walk here”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

We completed the walk from the 1st (I think) observation area, where all the souvenir shops & cafes are with a big car park. The walk is linear to the top of the next crater and back. The views are spectacular and the last part of the climb quite strenuous. We did it on a sunny day in shorts and t-shirt which proved to be a big mistake - the horseflies bit us to death! There is an interesting video of how the lake was formed in the info centre.

“The whole world stops with this lake in front of you”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

Although less famous than Lake Akan, Lake Mashu is definitely the most stunning of the 3 lakes of the Akan National Park. Whilst Lake Akan offers lakeside resorts and restaurants, Lake Mashu has maintained its exclusiveness and tranquility. We made our first attempt to see the lake by going along the western route (the more popular route). Too bad it was super foggy and visibility was like 20 feet. We continued our journey to Shiretoko. But coming back, we tried the eastern route and got to the eastern lookout. It was a beautiful day and we got to see the lake perfectly. When the lake appeared in front of us, we felt like the clock and the world had stopped. We looked at the lake for 5 minutes and it did not move a bit. The lake reflected everything in perfect symmetry which shocked us. It was as if the lake had not changed its look for 100 million years.

Tip 1: if you cannot see the lake with first attempt, try coming back another day if your itinerary permits.
Tip 2: Alternative eastern lookout has a lower altitude and slightly less likely to be foggy.
Tip 3: The eastern route allows you to visit another beautiful attraction - "The pond of God's son".

“Captivating sight”
Reviewed May 5, 2013 via mobile

We visited early May but it was still snowing. What a beautiful sight! See it to believe it!
As with all national park in Hokkaido, there was no admission fees. Parking was a standard JPY 410 and it covered parking at both Lake Mashu and Izo Zan (sulfur mountain) that was 20 minutes away by car.

“Well we had an excellent view on the day we arrived in the region”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

It's said that the mist and clouds shroud the lake from view. We visited the lake four times. On the first day it was completely clear and had a wonderful view. Just as well one had the time before checking in to do this.

Another day we visited the lake to take the mountain path which heads east from the car park. We did about four miles on this just seeing one other person. Funny enough the buses and cars disgorge their occupants for the photo op but few go walking. Not to sure about bears on this path but very atmospheric in the mist.

There are two car parks on the south / south west side. One free the other pay. The latter has the facilities and shops.
