“Excellent holiday in an excellent property - thank you!”
Reviewed August 28, 2013 via mobile

We stayed in Granary Cotrage - Caroline and Kevin made us feel welcome from the minute we arrived to the time we left. They are great hosts and have spent a great deal of effort in making this property a place to spend quality time in. As said elsewhere in other reviews, this is about as good as you get and we felt sorry to leave.

We also had both a evening meal and an afternoon tea during our stay - both of excellent quality and well worth having, at very reasonable cost.

Usually we would hesitate recommending a place to others, we would have no hesitation here. We would all like to thank you for looking after us so well - even our dog made a friend with Crumble!

The two person self catering cottage 'Puffin Quoy' is a delight. Large spacious and airy the cottage is so well thought out and provides absolutely everything you could need or want. Very comfortable bed with top of the range bedding ensures a great night's sleep. A huge bathroom with whirlpool bath and rain shower proved just the perfect pick me up after a hard day exploring Orkney. There is a lovely patio with views overlooking the harbour where we spent many hours lazily watching boats or birds. It is well situated being between Stromness & Kirkwall for access to all the wonderful adventures Orkney has to offer. The well tended garden, the summerhouse, the lovely hosts, the fantastic views, the home made cake! So many things that all added to the pleasure of our stay, no hesitation in recommending this property, it's simply the best!

We stayed B&B with Caroline and Kevin. There is only one guest room in the house, although there are attractive self-catering facilities around the courtyard. Our room was well-appointed and charming, with views across the lovely garden to the sea and islands beyond. The en-suite was small but functional. The best bit, however, (apart from the friendliness) was the food; the breakfasts were wonderful, and Caroline appears to source locally anything she doesn't make herself, so the marmalade and jams we spread on her home-made bread came from just down the road. We stayed in for dinner one night and, again, the food was fantastic. Our next visit to the Orkneys will definitely include a stay at the Quoy:-we already have our eye on the self catering.

We really appreciate the time you have taken to give us such a super review and we are delighted you enjoyed your stay in our home.
Caroline's been busy making her own marmalade and black currant jam from our own fruit today so we are keeping busy...
Hope to see you again on your next visit!

We love Orkney...visited many times BUT always been disappointed with accomodation. 2013 was different! We discovered the Quoy of Houton & Caroline & Kevin. Wow, at last everything you could possibly wish for, want or need for a fantastic holiday all wrapped up in one idyllic place. They have put so much thought & care into every little detail, from welcome packs to dainty hand soaps. Superbly equipped kitchen to lovely comfy beds. Panoramic views to spots of privacy. AND you don't even have to cook your own meals, Caroline will do it for you & extremely well too & the cost is very reasonable. She & Kevin are consumate hosts, never intrusive but always on hand if needed. Her Gardens are worthy of a big mention & Kevin's dry stone walling has to be seen to be believed. If you want the best for a holiday in Orkney try the Quoy at Houton but hurry I know for a fact she's already booking for 2014 because we're going back for 3 weeks this time

Room Tip: The Puffin Quoy was our ' home' for 2 weeks and was perfect for the two of us.

We really appreciate all of the great comments about The Puffin Quoy and I think we enjoyed your stay with us as much as you enjoyed the Puffin. We have fond memories of sharing a glass or three of the fizzy stuff with you both and are so glad you're returning next year!!!!
See you in 2014...

May 2013: Caroline and Kevin made our stay a memorable one in both the excellent B&B as well as in Puffin. Luxurious comfort and beautiful surroundings made our first trip to Orkney a perfectly relaxing and very enjoyable one. The location is peaceful yet near main sites of interest and a short drive to Stromness. Puffin is fully equipped with extras like a working wood burning stove and wi fi connection as well as everything you need for a week or two, all tastefully done and with great attention to detail. Views from the lounge are just perfect overlooking the bay. Caroline and Kevin made us welcome and we would recommend their accommodations highly, we look forward to returning!

Room Tip: Puffin is great for longer stays and the B&B excellent for shorter visits.

We have just ended our third stay at the 'Puffin Quoy' cottage this time for 2 weeks exploring new areas of the fascinating Orkney Isles and visiting old favourites. We love this cottage which is ideal for couples. Its ideally located to explore the islands. One week is never enough on the Orkneys which is why we extended our stay to 2 weeks this time around. It was lovely to see Kevin and Caroline Critchlow again and of course little 'Crumble' the terrier. They are always so welcoming.
Everything you will need in a self catering is there and don't worry about bringing stuff over from the UK with you because in the main town of Kirkwall, which is just a 15 minute drive away, you will find a Tesco, Lidl and a Co-op stores next to each other stocking everything you will need. The cottage is well supplied with cleaning materials anyway. The town of Stromness is only a 10-15 minute drive away in the other direction and that is where we found the newly revamped 'Ferry Inn' pub which effectively became our 'local'.
There was a survey last year to discover the happiest place to live in the UK and the Orkneys came out on top. Visit it yourself and you will discover why. Two weeks at 'Puffin Quoy' has recharged our batteries once again. It was just the therapy we needed.

As always a pleasure to have you stay in The Puffin again this year-and you even saw a whale!
It's always the best compliment we can have to have our guests return year after year..
Once again thank you for the review and for taking the time to tell others about us and to give your recommendations.

We stayed at Puffin Quoy for three nights in May 2013. The apartment was so much more than we expected. Every detail- from the quality appliances, the bedroom furniture, the bathroom and spa, the kitchen (with its wonderful sparkle in the granite bench-top), the decor and views from the living room reflected both a vision for hospitality and a respect for the environment. Kevin and Caroline were wonderful hosts who seem to delight in providing a 5 star experience for their guests. Nothing was too much trouble, and the breakfasts were to die for. Our three night stay at Puffin Quoy was the highlight of our month long trip through Scotland, London and Paris. True Orkney hospitality that will bring us back again and again.
