We recently returned from a weeks holiday at Buxa Farm Croft .Buxa is a superb location with woderful views over Scapa Flow , Hoy mountains and Stromness.
Our group consisted of three adults,a teenager and a 5yr old. Buxa croft was equipped to the highest standard with absolutely everything we could possible need .The comprehensive booklet on Orkney and the daily up date of what was on in Orkney was excellent. The vast area outside ,the beach and the play equipment was an added bonus. The male hen harrier and wildlife were a delight. Everyone one of us had the most amazing time on Orkney. We loved every minute and wish we could have stayed longer.
Buxa is truly a first class delightful place to stay and we hope to return.

Superb location with fantastic views. Solid, stone-built cottages beautifully restored to very high levels internally. Builder and plumber in group, both impressed. All mod-cons, kitchen very well appointed. Wildlife amazing- geese migrating overhead, short eared owl and a marsh harrier quartering the fields to front and rear.

Room Tip: Identical rooms, can be double or twin bedded.

We have visited Orkney before and stayed at the chalets. A fantastic holiday was had by all. This time we had the opportunity to have the Croft House and loved it immediately. Even if you stayed indoors the whole time there would be nothing else you would need!! The views are spectacular and all so private. We didn't do that! There are so many things to do and see, Buxa is ideally placed to make everything accessible. even the ferries for the islands. This is a wonderful base to enjoy everything Orkney has to offer - if you have the time!! So many memories to cherish.

When I plan a vacation, I spend a lot of time finding just the right place to stay, whether it's a self-catering unit or a hotel. I have to say I was a bit skeptical about a place that consists of three connected units, but in the end I went with my gut, and I'm happy to say that Buxa Farm Chalets did not disappoint. It actually exceeded my expectations.

Without ever having visited the Orkney Islands before it was hard to know exactly where to stay on the main land. By luck, Buxa Farm Chalets is in the perfect location, centrally situated slightly outside Orphir so that it is within easy driving distance of everything you'd want to see and every place you'd want to go on the West Mainland--Kirkwall, Stromness, plus the prehistoric sites of Skara Brae, the Standing Stones & Ring of Brodgar, Brough of Birsay, and even the Brough of Gurness.

The location is also perfect from a scenery standpoint. Since it's located on the west side of the island, it affords renters spectacular sunsets. The cottages face the island of Hoy, giving you an eyeful of ocean and uninhabited, hilly terrain interrupted only by a charming lighthouse. The property is surrounded by cow pastures and the next door neighbors, the Johnstons, have free range chickens, so you can pick up the tastiest free range eggs ever (they're naturally salty). You can also walk down to the beach along a path that is adjacent to the cow pasture. although the beach is pretty rocky. It's still fun to pick up rocks and see what's under them at low tide.

As others have said, each cottage is extremely well-equipped with everything you could possible need and more than enough of everything (towels, plates, glasses, silverware, kitchen tools). It's true that the towel rack in the bathroom makes things very toasty, which is nice at night and first thing in the morning. The rack is not heated during the day, however.

The cottage is spacious and comfortable with an enormous entry way. I'm not sure why it's so big, but maybe it's for those really rainy days (we only had one day of rain, and it wasn't that bad). The weather, in fact, was incredibly warm for these parts, reaching 21 degrees C (around 70 degrees F). There is an American sized washing machine and dryer in a small room that's connected to the three chalets.

Unlike others, I did not find that being next door to others presented any kind of noise or privacy problems. We barely saw or interacted with anyone else while we were there. Kathy did let me look inside the croft house, which can house as many as 14 people. I was disappointed initially that it was not available, but ultimately it was better to have one of the three apartments (we had the northernmost one at the end, which afforded us great views; I highly recommend this unit).

Kathy, the owner, is a pretty busy woman with both the chalets and a B&B to run, so she provides you with the most comprehensive booklet of things to do on the island, as well as instructions on how things work in the unit rather than walking you through them herself. If you have any questions, she is more than happy to answer them by email or phone, and she does like to check in every now and then, but she was pretty busy when we were there, so she didn't come around that often.

I didn't want to leave this lovely place and will probably return for a week the next time, so we can have time to explore the other islands.

I highly recommend the Buxa Chalets - the middle section is where two nephews, a guest and I stayed for a week. Facing Scapa Flow we had a fantastic view with grazing cattle next door. Our accommodations were spacious, with all the amenities one needed, and more. Chalet was tastefully decorated, spotless, and well supplied. Washer and dryer appreciated. We all loved our home away from home. A great place to return to after an active day.

Kathy and Keith Bichan are gracious hosts, a warm and caring couple, fun and full of energy, a wealth of information who also had numerous brochures on a counter about island activities, places to dine, etc.

Westrow Lodge is a most proficiently administered B&B. I loved being there. Would return in a heartbeat -- Joan C. Harris

Room Tip: Each place would be an equally good place to reside

Happy to hear that the middle chalet with panoramic views to both sides was appreciated by you. Many of our visitors debate which is the "best" chalet for the views and we think they all have their merits. Glad you were able to visit our B & B also! Many thanks for your review and would love to have you back!

The chalet was a fantastic place to stay! The weather we had was mostly nice; we were staying during one of the warmest times of the year in August, but the chalet stayed cool. We would open the big slider or the entrance-way to let fresh air in to cool it down quickly (and pleasantly I might add). The large windows, skylight in the bathroom, and general design allowed the temperature to remain comfortable when it was either warm and sunny outside, or dark, wet and blustery. We stayed there with four people and fit just fine. My great Aunt stayed in one bedroom, while my cousin and his girlfriend shared the second bedroom. I could have stayed with my great aunt in one of the bedrooms, as there were two twin beds in each room that could be attached or separated, but I chose to stay on the bouncy pull-out couch in the sitting area/living room. I couldn't pass up the chance to wake up to an incredible view of Hoy and Scappa Flow each night and each morning. Kathy visited nearly every day, and answered all our questions usually before we could even ask them. The kitchen was great and we cooked several meals, usually breakfast, and never needed a thing. Coffee maker worked great. One night we even used the stone enclosed grill outside. Despite the wind it worked great and we had a delicious meal. We traveled all over the mainland island seeing the Ring, Skarra Brae, Tomb of the Eagles, eating in Stromness and Kirkwall, and driving out to Deerness as well. Orphir was a great location to stay; not too much farther away from any one point of interest while being a beautiful area in itself. and if we had more time I would have loved to see each island, especially Hoy, and explore more of the Orkneys. I did not want to leave, and I plan to return again to experience even more of the Northern Isles. I don't think I could find a better place to stay, except perhaps the stone Croft House just next door. Thank you!

We had the last week of the olympics here, having spent the previous week a couple of miles away in some other accomodation. This is relevant as we stayed in and watched the TV much more than normal and were able to make direct comparisons. This led to some observations we might not have normally made.

The TV is very small. Not a problem if you are just watching the news (as we would normally), but not great if you are used to a modern size of TV and want to watch some of the olympics. The reception was great though.

The chalet was very hot. The thermometer on the wall always told us to turn down the heating - but you can't! It is the burningly hot towel rail in the bathroom that is the culprit. It boils the whole chalet. We were advised on arrival to just keep the bathroom door shut - not a great solution when the bathroom has no window, just a rather underpowered fan. The solution was to completely bury the towel rail under the very generous supply of towels.

This is a chalet, so the walls are very thin. You do know when your neighbours use the bathroom and what they are doing in the bedroom.

The views are fantastic though, we never tired of looking (or going) outside. This has to be the best located building I have stayed in. Truly exceptional.

The chalet is large, in good condition, clean and very well appointed. The best supply of linen and crockery ever, making life very easy

Overall, this is a very nice place to stay. We would have no problem in coming back and are happy to recommend it. We have stayed in a number of places on Orkney now (we love the place). This isn't the best accomodation we have stayed in on Orkney, but it is very close. I don't think anybody would be disappointed by staying here.

Thank you for your review on Tripadvisor and we are delighted that you would like to come back to Buxa Farm Chalets and are happy to recommend it to others. We have also taken your criticisms on board. I think the next time you visit us you would find Buxa Farm Croft House better suited to your needs. The Croft House has the same fantastic views as the chalets but also some additional amenities. The lounge is 3 times the size of the ones in the chalets and is ideally suited for a large screen television and we have put in a 37 inch screen with Blu-ray player. There is also an additional smaller television in the kitchen. The heated towel rails in the two bathrooms are electric rather than wired into the main heating system so can be turned off and on at the wall switch. The croft house is a stand alone building with 3 foot stone walls so you are guaranteed complete isolation from the neighboring chalets. Just about everyone that has stayed in the chalets have been delighted with them but we also understand everyone has different needs and concerns. We would be most happy if you would return to Buxa and stay in the Croft House so we can ensure your stay with us is an ideal experience for you!
