Peaceful and tranquil. Easy access to Cairns city. Gardens to make you green with envy.

Just take your insect repellant! And a picnic, and your mask and snorkel. Yes, there are eels and fish to say hello to underwater!

A great place to relax and have a swim - not far from the city life

Crystal Cascades is about 30 minutes drive from Cairns, out past the airport. It is not a well publicised tourist area and its existence seems to be a well guarded secret by the locals. In fact, when we asked how to get to it we were questioned about how we found out about it.

Basically it is a river filled with boulders with a resulting series of small water falls - hence the name cascades. When it has been raining heavily, as it was when we visited, the water is very high and fast and quite dangerous to swim in as you could easily be swept down the river. However, during drier times it looks like a wonderful place to spend the day swimming in the many larger pools along the river. And a great place to cool down on a hot day as the water looks very fresh.

Bathroom facilities are available and there is a small parking lot so get there early if you want to find a space.

It is a nice drive to the Cascades and the walk to the swimming holes is through the rainforest. the path is wide and safe! take a picnic lunch and if you are lucky, while you are sitting at the table eating, several huge monitor lizards come out and pick up the scraps. if you leave them alone, they won't touch you as they are only interested in some food. take your swimmers and have a refreshing swim in the swimming hole. there are no crocs in the area, so quite safe.
