There are a number of "cathar castles" built by the Aragonese and then taken over by the French. Queribus is a dramatic location, great views and reasonable accessibility for such an historic and unspolit site. its a ten minute hike up stone steps but not difficult, and windy at thye top. Really worth seeing, much preferred to others such as Peyrepertuse with its slippery steps; If you go before noon excellent views to the north and and east.

not only is the castle beautiful, but the views are fantastic one you make the climb up. You should be warned that the climb up is steep and descending down is tricky as well. This is probably not something for the "out of shape"...otherwise, it is great exercise for those who work out daily! It is a good driving distance from the Autoroute; however, it is worth the drive. You can also visit some of the wineries on the way....very nice people who take the time to explain their product. True artisans!

Queribus is perhaps the most remarkable castle I have ever seen for its location, perched on the top of a high rock, way above a valley, visible for miles around. It is in excellent condition, with some of the original vaulting still present in rooms below the keep. The views are breathtaking. You can drive a fair way up, but must walk 10 minutes to the castle itself. It is an absolute must for anyone visiting the area and, along with nearby Peyrepertuse, visible on the next ridge, is among the best of the Cathar castles. It is truly impressive and how it was constructed beggars belief.

We visited the chateu in strong winds and its elevated position and rugged nature gave the experience a touch of "The Lord of the Rings". Everyone loved the experience.

The chateau is one of the more accessible and most popular fortresses on the Cathar route. It has a prominent position with a severe climb to get from the car park to the citadel, but the path was well tended.
It is a compact castle with a main building housing the castle owners' accommodation with its impressive vaulted ceiling. There was a panoramic platform from where we had excellent 360 degree views including a great view across to Peyrepertuse and the valley towards the towns of Maury and St Paul-de-Fenouillet.
