We heard there was a new landlord and chef who came highly recommended so we thought we would try it out for a family get together. It was first class, the food was excellent, the pub is in an ideal spot on a village green, and between Oxford and Swindon so really easy to get to for both. The service was friendly and efficient, can't wait to go back. Although we didn't stay over the landlord was happy to show me one of the rooms before the guest booked in so we could book for a future date and not have to drive back after another great meal and a bottle of wine or two. Perfect location for walking or siteseeing, we are looking forward to our next visit. Thanks

We phoned on a wednesday for a price for a 2 night weekend stay and was told there is plenty of room and what the price was and that breakfast was £7.95pp which we found was odd that you had to pay EXTRA for breakfast in a B&B but we went along with it anyway as it looked nice and we then booked online on thursday morning through "their website" (and had a confirmation email from them) which also worked out at £10 per night CHEAPER than they had quoted on the phone! .

I got a missed call from them late friday morning (the day we were leaving for Chequers Inn 150+ miles away) I phoned them back and the Landord said my room was double booked and he had barely said sorry and just offered us the telephone number of some 20 roomed hotel...I said we dont want to stay in some big hotel thats why we booked with him, after questioning him further he just said........

"well I'm new to all this anyway"......

I think someone else had come along after us and had paid his telephone price not the website price and he just palmed us off!

We have eaten here a couple of times over the last few months, it is local to us and have used it in previous years for family gatherings but it went through a bit of a bad period with one of the former owners.
We had heard some good reports since new ownership and first decided to pop in on August Bank Holiday Monday lunchtime, we had not booked and it was busy but a table for two was available so after a friendly greeting from the landlady we were seated with menu's. We thought there would be quite a wait due to the other tables but no, our meals appeared in very reasonable time and certainly not in a slap-dash way. We both had steaks, the best we've eaten in a pub in a very long time, cooked perfectly and served with chips (other choices of potato were available) coleslaw, onion rings, tomato and mushrooms. A side dish of salad was also served but not eaten as the afore mentioned was more than enough.
We returned with my parents a couple of weeks later for dinner and the same friendly and good-timed service was repeated with a variety of delicious food.
Keep up the great work, by far the best pub in Longworth/Southmoor and surrounding villages.

Three of us visited last Friday night for dinner. A warm and friendly welcome from the landlord and landlady and excellent service from the staff. Two of us had steaks which were fresh and delicious and the other person had salmon which was also fab. Of course we had to have puddings!!! These were home cooked - between us we had a cheesecake, sticky toffee pudding and apple and cinnamon pie - again, simply lovely. We highly recommend a visit....

Under New Management
The perfect country village pub in the beautiful picturesque village of Charney Bassett.
Very welcoming, this has to be one of the most friendly places on earth,
Not only did the new management, Ian and Jackie, go out of their way to make us feel very welcome but every one of the locals we met were also very friendly and helpful. This is very much a family run establishment, Accommodation of 3 en-suite rooms decorated to a high standard. Our room was lovely comfortable.
The home cooked food was delicious, breakfasts were great!!!!
Highly Recommendable

Arrived on the week that the manager of the Inn was moving on so attention to customer service was limited; perhaps when the new broom is in place this venue will regain some level of past service delivery that underpinned its past very good rating on this site. The accommodation can only be described as adequate and as facilities quoted were not available on the dates we stayed expectations for a relaxed couple of days were not fulfilled.
