“Great place? Great place!”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

I had seen and heard some reviews in advance and the problem with that is that you expectations may become unappropriately high.
But this place really justifies its excellent reviews: reasonably priced accomodation/food/activities, excellent food, and super friendly staff - that's all you need for some nice days on this beautiful part of the wild coast!

There is always lots to do at Buccaneers, from volleyball, lounging by the pool, playing in the surf, exploring tidal pools, walking the long beach, surfing, kayaking down the river, horseback riding... You can stay here for a while and really get into a groove.
Managers were cheerful and helpful, on site massage therapists were great, accomodations were basic but comfortable and clean.
Make sure you take Buccaneers tour to the local school to hear the weekly choir performance. It is free but please give generously to support their daily hot meal program. It makes a huge difference to the children.

We stayed here 27 years ago and the location is as beautiful as ever with a wonderful beach for long walks. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the cottages. We did realize that it was now a backpackers and the en-suite rooms were shared in a cottage with a communal kitchen and had no problems with this but the linen was not washed properly and the towels smelled. The bathroom was dirty and a bit of cleaning would do no harm. The food was great - tasty and plentiful. The view from the deck was as lovely as ever and the price very reasonable of course.Next time the new lodges will be our choice as the Tutu and the Mandela looked lovely and clean.

Room Tip: The new lodges, Tutu and Mandela, are the place to be

Bucaneers is situated with a beautiful view over the sea. The owners are very nice. I got an interesting chat with the lady about the region and her support to her personnel.
Excellent food is prepared and you pay a small amount for it. Good rooms and space to sit along with the others. I was there alone but didnt feel lonelya at all.
They prepare activities for those who are staying there. One acitivity was a nice dinner _ almost everybody came to join it!

My friend and İ stayed at the Buccaneers in Feb. 2013. The location and the beach were very pleasant, but İ have never stayed at a backpackers with such a 'hard sell' attitude! They were determined to get you to go on this 'awsome' trip or that. The trips were expensive too. Funnily enough, the only two trips we did want to go on, were not available during our stay as the chap who organised them was away on a trip to the Transkei.
We spent our first night in a shared bungalow. It had one twin and two double rooms. It was very hot and there were no fans or a/c. The other people staying there were rather inconsiderate and very loud and left the shower and bathroom knee deep in sand.
We stayed in an ensuite cabin the second night and this was better but the first night and the attitude of the staff had spoilt the place for us really.
There is a cafe/bar by the pool but it closes at 5pm. Other than that you can self cater or sign up for the meal they provide each night. We only ate the meal once! By South African standards it was expensive and not very nice, and there was no choice. Breakfast too was quite expensive and was accompanied by loud rock music even at 8am - not everyone's cup of tea.
I would not go back

Room Tip: The ensuite cabins are fine with nice view of the beach. But the shared bungaloo things have limited...

We stayed in the Tutu lodge (if you can book it - do it now!) and had initially planned on staying just one night. The minute we laid our eyes upon the room - we literally ran straight back to reception to extend our stay. What a view, what a room! Our room (like the rest of the hostel) is beautifully situated on a slope over looking the ocean, the lagoon and Cintsa east.
The hostel is really nice as well, with great and always helpful (and fun) staff, tons of things to do. Also what I really like is the fact that there is a nice bar area where you can do your hardcore partying, but if you prefer a little bit more peace and quiet like us, there enough space to find that too.

Room Tip: The Tutu Lodge is like from a fairy tale - there's no way you're gonna be disappointed.

We stayed at Buccaneers in mid-February 2013 as the first stop on a 3 week BazBus hop down the Garden Route to Cape Town and it was an incredible way to start our trip.

From organising a shuttle from the airport (we flew into East London), a great double room in a shared cottage that allowed us to meet some new friends, group activities that helped staff & guests interact, a deserted beautiful beach just 5 mins walk .. The place made us feel right at home and we were sad to leave after only 2 days.

If you are planning a trip of SA, then is a must-visit place (if not just for the view from the breakfast room) and l promise you that you won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: The shared cottages are very communal, clean and comfortable and although slightly further away from...
