“A "Must Stay" auberge.”
Reviewed August 10, 2010

The Auberge is one of the best travel experiences we have had. There was a mix up with our reservations (absolutely necessary); make sure you confirm your reservation. Our hostess, Marie discovered that someone else had double booked (I call that lodging horseshoes), so we had a place to lay our heads. What a place!. Room was large, bed was comfortable, and the view fantastic. You can lay in your bed and look out over the St. Lawrence. We enjoyed the evening meal. My wife had the mushroom soup, and I had the salad. Soup was a far cry from anything that most commercial restaurants serve. Lettuce was fresh from the garden. Main courses were fish and rabbit, both done to delicious perfection. Ended up with a yummy gourmet chocolate volcano dessert. After a great sleep, we had Breton crepes for breakfast, with a fried egg peeking through the crepe. Add maple syrup, and it can't be beat. Our hostess was very friendly, extremely helpful, and willing to listen to our fractured French. One observation: our room (# 10) was in the main building, and smells from the kitchen wafted by while we sat on the verandah. We found it OK, letting us imagine the great dinner to come. Some may find it objectionable; if so, stay in the other building. Make sure you visit the Jardin de Metis (Reford Gardens) 10 km. away. Best botanical gardens we've seen in Canada.

Very difficult to imagine an establishment anywhere with such a ratio of cost to value. My wife and I have traveled all over the world and rarely have stayed where the lodging, the food, the service, and the amenities gave so much value for so little cost...and then there's the view from the sliding glass door in Room 3...the St Lawrence River at the foot of your bed, and because it flows southwest to northeast, the sunsets across the river are excellent. Don't miss Jardins de Metis, and golf at Boules Rock is quite good as well.

This is a real nice accomodation not to miss on your way to the Gaspesie!

There is a very friendly atmosphere thank to Marie and her husband. The big rooms on the river/sea side have great views and are very clean and tastefully decorated.

Last but not least the special food wich will be prepared by the French cooker and Marie's supervision.

When I made my hotel reservation at Auberge du Grande Fleuve, I tried to make a dinner reservation only to be advised, "But of course madam, dinner and breakfast are included." Given the rate of $216 CDN for a room with a queen bed and view of the sea, the value proposition was great but would it meet my standards?

Absolutely, the accommodation is simple, meticulously clean and the view spectacular especially for birders - eiders, loons, guillemots, loons and razorbills visible from bed!

A great sign - two chefs picked herbs from a small garden close to our room before dinner and the food, wine list, and and service were truly outstanding -fresh halibut, shrimp and exceptional desserts. We also got to know our fellow diners and when we met again for breakfast (crepes coddling a poached egg with cheeses, fruits, croissants, breads, and jams) we were sharing stories and travel plans.

This is a small family business with a warm, welcoming spirit. A bar and library are available. Great place to stay for a trip to Reford Gardens or a Gaspe tour!

  • Liked — Gentle and welcoming spirit! Great View! Exceptional birding! Outstanding food!
  • Disliked — Basic room.
