The place looked far less old in pics. The room was shabby but nicely sized and plain correct, the only problem is it was a "3rd" floor (roof) which was actually a 5th with NO lift and big old steps. Be ready for a LOT of extra exercise and for carrying your luggage as high as needed with no help. Breakfast was too simple for the price, basically bread, butter and tiny jams, the best is the croissant (1) you get. I finally choose to skip continental and ask for ham plus latte, a cheaper and more satisfying combination. The restaurant has a nice menu and carte and food is really good, though I didn't have the Aligot. Don't expect huge plates, they are medium sized. Staff are nice, but not really helpful with local info. It is basically a couple of brochures, nothing personalized or technical (l'office de tourisme was the same). They seemed puzzled by my little French and commented about it, but no one tried other languages (again, this happens everywhere in France). The region is really beautiful and would visit it again but would choose a place with a lift or less stairs!

We didn't stay in this hotel, but went to the restaurant which was excellent. It appeared to be run by 2 two staff (a chef and a waiter) who took great pride in their work. Don't be put off by the lack of an English menu, together will a little schoolbook french, some English spoken by the waiter and help from other friendly diners we managed to order a 3 course traditional French meal. Ensure you leave room for dessert which was out of this world!

For anyone travelling with a dog, our black lab was also made very welcome and was even given a drink before us!

Travelling round France, couldn't find a hotel with parking, anywhere. Stumbled across this little sleep 'town'...La Canourge, and a super little 'hotel'...more like a B&B, it was a godsend. This little place is more for travellers who are coming through Spain, as it's your first stop. We arrived, no booking, at 9pm, desperate for somewhere to stay. What a lovely welcome, I think run by three ladies together. Very old fashioned it's NOT Chic, it's NOT boutique, it's just a very quaint (no lift and there's three floors) old hotel, over two buildings. Deserves it's rating purely because they are lovely and speak no English, and tried to get us somewhere to lay our heads. Could not recommend this place for a sleepover, good food, cafe style, beautiful place to look round, took us two hours in the morning before we set off. The sleepy town has a river running through it, with a lock, literally...through the buildings and each alleyway you find yourself walking up or down, to the side, or underneath is more water. It's breathtaking, I took loads of pictures and so glad we found it. It's NOT the Ritz, and don't expect 5* luxury, it's what it looks like from the outside, on the inside. Clean, crisp sheets, a warm welcome, i'd definitely make this my choice, rather than stay anywhere else.
