We ate in La Poste because it was just beside where we parked the car and the menu looked good. First impressions was of true French tradition, old fashioned decor but crisp white tablecloths (no synthetic fabrics here) .
This I found very reassuring.
There were a young couple serving, briskly and efficiently but with real politness and (in a very quiet town) the place was very busy.
More reassurance.
We both went for the €19.95 option menu , This was full of the kinds of ingredients which are cheap to buy but need real kitchen skills to cook well.
At this stage I was at reassurance capacity.
I had a Tete de Veaux Ravigote to start, perfectly cooked, served warm with its proper proportion of fat and jelly and a piquant Ravigote sauce. Totally delicious. My calves liver was served perfectly rare as requested and served with an amazing tongue tingling sauce of Elderberry Vinegar which cut beautifully through the sweet richness of the liver. With this I had the local speciality potato, Aligot, unctious creamy garlicy potato puree.I was in food heaven. My wife's starter of pear and Rochfort (made just down the road from La Cavalerie), a little quiche really , again served warm, was again superb. Her melting Pork Cheeks which could be eaten with a spoon were delicious but maybe lacked a sharp contrasting sauce. My dessert was another treat from the kitchen, a Galette des Rois,(it was January 5th) impeccable puff pastry and a light creamy almond filling all the more delicious by being served warm from the oven, the same treatment would have much improved My wife's Pear and Almond tart which suffered a little from the cold.
A delicious meal.
Then drama struck as Madame on the table next door got a funny turn and went as white as a sheet.Within seconds our waiter was by her side, calmly and gently taking her pulse and then helping her to lie down on the floor, on cushions which he conjured up, until she recovered. We were most impressed. ( and Madame indeed recovered after a little while)
All in all a wonderful meal with a charming and professional team of waiters.
We will certainly go back.
