“great place to stay, very friendly”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

Good mosquito net and air conditioning and plesant verandah. Can arrange safari to Yala National Park. Very comfortable jeep, one of the best in the park. I saw a leopard eating it`s kill. I didn't expect to see a leopard which was a highlight.Altogether a great experience. In the hotel, very warm and familiar atmosphere, the perfect place to get closer to local culture. Also, they have a nice bar and restaurant with a cute terrace where you can relax and eat. It;s absolutely the right place to stay!

I stayed at Traveller's home for 3 nights. We were given a very reasonable price of 1,300 RP for a double room with attached bathroom (cold water). The room came with a mosquito net (necessary in Tissa) and a fan. More expensive bungalows were available outside of the house but the rooms inside were clean and bright so we opted for the cheapie. The food on offer is relatively cheap and good quality. The family informed me that during a period of 3 months prior to my visit they had been on holiday, and leased the property to a local family. During this time a lot of tourists made complaints about the owner and various incidents.

Room Tip: If you want a bit of luxury opt for a bungalow. Otherwise bargain for a room in the main house near...

We stayed here 2 nights while visiting the national park. The only reason we stayed an extra night is because on Suday afternoon there are no buses to Ella.

The place was OK. Room was overpriced but clean and comfortable. We paid 2500 RS with AC. The food was also just OK. We orders to late to get a curry so we had some overpriced noodles.

The Safari was also over priced (note the theme). We paid 5000 RS all inclusive each. This gave us a 6 hour tour. The trip was so so. Good to see the park but 6 hours was a little long and you get a lot
Of dust in your eyes.

Tissa has very little to offer, it is dangerous to walk around at night. We are a group of 2 females and we got grabbed at about 8pm walking back to this guesthouse. The staff were very friendly and felt very bad about what happened.

Overall a pretty good stay. Nothing amazing.

Stayed here in mid August, in part due to recommendation in Lonely Planet.

We booked 2 days in advance, and they said nothing about safaris when we booked. We then booked an independent driver who'd been recommended to us. When we got to Travellers home and they found out we weren't going to safari with them, they behaved really badly. Because we'd booked multiple rooms and arrived late they had to honour our booking (otherwise the rooms would have stayed empty), but they then started doing silly things to us and our driver. Not very impressed, and we seriously considering leaving after the first of our two nights there.

Room Tip: If you really have to stay there - make sure it's clear whether you're going on a Yala safar...

When I am reading other comments I do regret I didn’t do that before I booked this place. It is highly rated in Rough guide book that is why I went for that. At first everything looked fine. We booked safari has a drink each a night before. I wanted to pay for that and the owner said no no, next day. D Safari turned out to be one big mistake; the driver was crazy driving around the same route 5 times and over speeding. We didn’t see many animals. After 4 hours everybody was so fed up that we were ready to go back but know. It lasted for 6 h. When it came to payment for the Srilankan beer he charged us275 rupees. In Mirrisa or Unawatuna where we went next the same beer was between 200-220 rupees and those places are kind of resorts!! Also food was very expensive!!! Not mentioning that he was nice only till the moment we paid! And the best thing in the end!! When I saw a bill for food, drinks and room it turned out that they put 10% for tax. I didn’t know what tax it was, I asked other people and they told me that it was service charge. So the beer came out around 300 rupees. Later on we met other people who did safari with other places and it turned out that we well over paid. I must admit that this was the worst place we stayed in Sri Lanka. What is more, nobody ever ripped me off during my trips. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this place and I want to send an email to rough guides to get rid of this guy form the book so other people are not caught the way we were.

Accommodation and food themselves OK. However Travellers’ Home is going to get the most negative comments that I’ve made about any place in SL, for they lied to us about the safari.

The night before, we had arrived and then, as guests do, sat down for a chat with the owner about a safari. There are roughly 3 kinds – 4 hours, 6 hours and 12. We said at the outset we wanted a 6 hour one and he said there were only 4 and 12-hour ones going the next day. "Oh dear", we said, whereupon he made a phone call and then said to us “how about a compromise?” He said he would ask the driver of the 4 hour safari to give the people already on it a bit more time so that it finished at 11 AM and not 10. To this we agreed, and got charged a price mid-way between the cost for a 4 hour and that for a 6 hour. We didn’t expect to come back as late as 12, but neither did we expect to come back as early as 10.30. SL being SL rather than Austria, I would probably have left this but when all the other people in the vehicle with us said they’d been told the safari finished at 10 it was clear that Mr Travellers’ Home had merely told us what he thought we wanted to hear to get us to sign on the dotted line (and pay our money). That’s more than just a mistake; that’s dishonest.

We stayed in this guesthouse for two days and we liked it very much. The family who run this place are very nice. The food is excelent and the room are nice and clean. The rice fields are all around the place. We wnt for the jeepsafari and it was fantastic. The driver knew all the good spots and was very cheerfull. I would recomment this place to everybody.
