La Posada de Bodega Vistalba
Ranked #4 of 15 Lujan de Cuyo B&B and Inns
Reviewed May 22, 2010

A relaxing weekend stay at La Posada at Bodega Vistalba in the Mendoza region was the best part of my trip to Argentina in April 2009. It came highly recommended by Fodor's, but the price did cause me to pause. I got my money's worth.

The rooms are equivalent to an upscale hotel, and the views of the Andes were spectacular. The complimentary mini-bar was fully stocked, and we received a bottle or two of Pulenta wines from the vineyards sorrounding the winery. The complimentary late lunches at the on-site gourmet restaurant, La Bourgogne, were excellent. And after a complimentary bottle of wine with lunch, afternoon siestas were mandatory. Then some walking around the vineyards at sunset was good preparation for the hearty and complimentary breakfast the next morning.

Guests also get access to all of the winery. My wife and I spent hours walking through the vineyards, taking pictures, and exploring the different rooms at the winery. We happened to be there during harvest time, and it was a special treat to meet the proprietor, Carlos Pulenta, who was overseeing the harvest. He treated us like friends and made sure that we were having a great stay. The rest of the staff treated us the same way.

I don't remember leaving the property all weekend.

This is a truly special place to stay in the heart of Mendoza's wine country. There are just two rooms located within the main production complex of a boutique winery in Lujan de Cuyo, a 20 minute drive south of downtown Mendoza.

Our room was large and had a private terrace with views of the vineyards and the Andes. A well-stocked mini-bar (included in the room rate), a rain-head shower, satellite television and very comfortable beds were among the amenities. Also included in the room rate was breakfast and dinner in the on-site restaurant, which lived up to its reputation as one of the best restaurants in the region.

The best part of the stay was the fact that we were essentially guests of the winery. Besides the usual tour of the complex, we were given more or less free reign of the property. It's not common to be able to take long walks in the vineyards in Mendoza or to hang out and watch the workers sorting grapes!

Service was pleasant and helpful, if limited to the regular office hours of the winery.

So... about the downsides of staying in a working winery: Well... you're staying in a working winery. Trucks arrive at 7:30 in the morning with deliveries. The staff sets up for breakfast receptions in the room below where you sleep. The nearby road buzzes with agricultural and regular car traffic. While we loved the place, it certainly is not for light sleepers!

We can't say enough nice things about this place. Definitely do book a night here, but you might consider packing those ear plugs.

You'll need to contact the winery directly to book. See their website, www.carlospulentawines.com for more information.
