Description: The Derby Arms joined the Ainscoughs Pub team in December 2008 after extensive restoration. Serving good food, beer and wine in a traditional environment with log fires and period furniture just like the rest of the pubs in the group. We have now been recommended in the Michelin Pub Guide for 2014 and have won the 'Pub of the Season' award, CAMRA. We have a games room with a pool table and dart board which is intended to form the focus of the village. The Derby Arms was purchased from Punch Taverns by the Witherslack Community Land Trust and the Ainscough Family took over the lease to preserve it as part of Witherslack life. Part of the pub was converted into the village shop, run by the community with community shareholders.

“Eat early!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2012

Food was very good but the place just got busier and busier - glad we got there early so by the time people were hunting for somewhere to sit (and they did seem like vultures at times) we had finished our food and were ready to leave. If we had gone there for a drink only, no problem.

“Worth a detour for”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 25, 2012

Stopped by in July with friends and looking for somewhere to eat. The Jolly Boys Battered fish and chips was so good I took my husband there as a detour on the way home from the lakes..and he agreed it was the best F+S he had had for a long time. There are lots of real ales too and the service is excellent. Caroline in particular. Keep up the good work!

“Dry Food, Poor Cooking”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2012

Ordered duck breast: it came dry with no sauce on a bed of very dried noodles that could feed a village because there was way too much. In addition to that they served it with a big bowl of dried mashed potatoes. This was in excess and the combination of "magret de canard" and noodles was so wrong, and it should not have been with an extra mashed potatoes on the side that was impossible to finish as there was too much food.

“Lively village pub”

Good food, Good atmosphere. I have always enjoyed but do find the portions a little random. Overload the protein and low on veg.

“Just OK”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 17, 2012

We decided to visit the Derby Arms for a family birthday as it was ac onvenient halfway meeting point for all. The barman was extremely slow and had difficulty giving us the correct drinks, Choice on menu very good, Starters excellent, the main course not at all good, Salad of ham and pineapple looked like it had been ready chewed and consisted of the sgraggy grissly bits of ham and some tinned pineapple.. The waiter asked if all was well, we mentioned that the chips were not good and looked liked they had been cooked twice and kept in the oven, His reply, yes we have a lot of complaints we are working on it, possibly should sort out as soon as complaint first noticed.
Lovely surroundings, but will not be going back
