“A Secluded Oasis of Comfort in Wine Country”
Reviewed January 26, 2009

We stumbled upon the Residencia Historica de Marchihue because we planned late and Santa Cruz was booked up. We arrived hot and dusty and for two days thought we had gone through some sort of a portal-- the hotel is a hacienda from the 1700s, recently opened as a hotel. It has grand rooms, bathrooms with long, deep tubs and glass showers, bedrooms with four-poster beds and fireplaces. The grounds are spacious and there is a new swimming pool with hammocks under the trees nearby. All the food is grown or raised on the property --the strawberries were magnificent! The staff were helpful and charming.

We spent two nights at the hotel. The building is very nice and has/is being restored. Some of the gardens and patios are more or less in a nice restored condition. The rooms and bathrooms are big. However, for a 5 star hotel, as they claim, they were lacking: bathrobes, slippers, waste bins, very few toiletries, no phones, no wi-fi, no brochures about the hotel, what it offered or what to do in the area, etc etc. Having no phone, meant no local or intenational calls, but also, no room service. Since they only offered a caraffe with tap water, one had to go in search of someone for a drink, if one was lucky to find anyone. Although the patios were very nice, the sitting areas were terrible. They might like Phillippe Starck furniture, but plastic sofas is a bit much to ask of a tired traveller that only wants a confortable place to sit and enjoy a nice drink. The interior is nice, but once again, the plastic P S chairs are the killers. Minimalist decor but within reason. As for the service, the two waiters tried to make our stay as comfortable as possible, they were very nice. We were the only guests there ( the first night) and had dinner the last night with one other table occupied, which turned out to be the owner. At the least, he could have greeted us or even said good night, but nothing. Maybe he thought being italian in Chile gives him the right to be impolite, but the guest is king . We are the ones paying for a 5 star service and regardless of how many guests he has, he should have the staff that befits a 5 star hotel. His manager should know how a top establishment works and what is expected. A big let down. Could have gone a bit further and stayed at the Hacienda los Lingues. Now that is how a 5 star hotel should be run.

  • Liked — the building itself and very nice waiters
  • Disliked — just about everything else
  • Stayed November 2008, traveled as a couple
