“A charming country house in Marchihue”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2013

As stated by Gitano19 the buildings and ground are really beautiful but the residence is far from luxurious.

Having worked myself in resorts in far flung places, I understand the challenges mgmt faces specially in the Human Resources area. Low occupancy impacts the level of service provided when the hotel gets busy because the staff is simply not in gear. The staff however are locals with hearts bigger than their sleeping rooms and they go out of their way to help you in every sense. I felt that managers and staff are doing what they can with what they have available - - and that is what counts.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet due to the location of the house.

Overall quite disappointing, particularly for the price which is pretty high by Chilean standards. The buildings and grounds are beautiful, but that was about the only highlight. We stayed on a Saturday night and were the only guests, so the place felt deserted. It was very cold at night and the heaters were not turned on, nor were we provided with blankets. Also, there was no hot water for the bath. The rooms are huge but not well-furnished and the toiletries were standard motel variety. The food was pretty ordinary and our meal was more expensive than ones we've had in decent restaurants in Santiago. The place has so much potential but, sadly, it still has a long way to go. It is far from luxurious.

We loved the Residencia Historica. We booked absolutely at the last minute for the last room available over easter weekend. We booked one of their two apartments because we are a family with two kids - one room for the kids one room for adults and a livingroom for the parents while the wee ones went to bed early.

The staff could not have been more helpful. We arrived with two tired hungry wee ones and although the hotel restaurant wouldn't open for hours, they made a special dinner for the kids and served them on the patio. Our youngest has severe food allergies and they catered to this with absolutely no problems. Food delicious and excellently cooked. They did all this with no warning what so ever.

Our room was perfect for our family. Lovely furniture and a great size. The bathroom looked like it had been newly renovated and was very clean. There is no wifi in the room but we liked that as it meant my husband had to relax!

Although the hotel doesnt advertise room service, my husband and I were served dinner in our room while the wee ones slept. The food really is excellent. We live in Chile (in Santiago) and we honestly think this is some of the best food we have had. Not overly complex but excellently prepared - really tasty without a trace of the usual over salt and sugar problems.

The grounds are lovely. A bit faded perhaps but charming. We had a lovely mooch around with the kids. A very memorable easter egg hunt in the trees on Sunday morning.

All the staff were lovely and very helpful. One lady spoke English but the majority of other staff spoke slowly in Spanish for us so we could understand.

Our only points for improvement for what we considered an excellent hotel in Chile:
1. a better map. They did ring us to see if we knew where the hotel was but in Spanish which wasnt that helpful as our Spanish is not very good. The map they sent and the one on the website is useless. The hotel is right out in the countryside and the address the hotel gives does not translate into any map or GPS. We spent a long time looking for it and had to ask at the service station. It doesn't help that Marchihue is spelt Marchigue on the local road signs. Once you find it it is really easy - all they need is a simple map and some directions on their website.
2. Fridges in their rooms. Our room was huge and could have fitted a kitchen. We had to leave our special food for our wee boy in the kitchen fridge which was ok except kept having the reception to get it back. A small fridge and some tea and coffee making facilities would have made a big difference. Considering the cost of the place, in fact it really should be a basic.

We stayed here for 4 nights in March, and it was a treat. Rooms were huge with nice modern bathrooms and the grounds were well maintained. The staff worked hard, especially to convince us they make the BEST Piscos Sours in Chile. We had a fabulous lunch one day in the arbor courtyard and also were escorted by most gracious hostess, Vivian, to the top of the nearby hills for a panamoramic view of the valley. We were also able to enjoy some time by the pool.

Very nice hotel, uniquely located in Colchagua Valley. Although the room was very basic (no safe, no airco, no television, no alarm clock, no minibar, no WiFi), the overall experience was very good. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the food is excellent, and there are lots of things to do: there is a swimming pool, ping pong tables, pool billiard, and more. WiFi is available at the reception desk only, but unfortunately it is very slow and unstable. It's good enough to check you email, but not more than that. I would definitely go back to this hotel.

The Residencia Historica is located just a few kilometers from the toy town of Marchihue and 40 minutes from the much larger Santa Cruz in Chile’s Colchagua Valley. Colchagua is one of the centers of the country’s rapidly growing wine industry and the Chilean outpost of blue chip labels such as Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite. We first visited the place in 2005, when it was still a work- in- progress.

When owners/partners Vivien Jones and her partner Silvio Castelli discovered what has become the hotel six years ago, the sprawling 18th-century home had seen better days. The bones remained, but they were buried in a tangle of old eucalyptus trees. Dead fruit trees and the thorns of roses tortured the grounds like a hair suit. Undaunted, the couple pursued a vision that can only be described as a labor of love: the promising wreck received the makeover it deserved.

Now Residencia Historica is one of the top places to stay in the Colchagua Valley, the perfect launching pad for a variety of activities includes wine tours, bike and horseback riding adventures.

Vivien and Silvio are also known to host bbq around a campfire and they can customize little side trips for you and your family.

Personally, we have returned to Residencia Historica several times, once for a decade birthday blow-out, bringing friends with us from Telluirde. One couple wound up buying a nearby vineyard.

Never know what life has in store.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good.

What a great place to visit. The combination of luxury and history is unique. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. An authentic hacienda experience in the heart of wine country. The grounds are rustic, with huge eucalyptus trees and lots of bird song.
