This was our second visit as we were so taken with Sawrey House on an earlier trip over a year ago. We had a very pleasant room looking over the garden to Esthwaite Water. Nice to open the curtains to each morning!
The hotel is situated in a beautiful area near Hawkshead Village and there are plenty of good walks nearby from flat woodland walks to more challenging uphillers (still not overly taxing). We particularly like the walk up to the nearby Tarns.
However, the stars of the show at the Hotel are the staff (who are obviously well trained and very friendly) and the food. We can not think of a place where the food is any better than Sawrey House. Everything is fresh and beautifully presented. It's 'posh' food without going to the extremes that some nouvelle cuisine establishments go to. Portions are generous without being over the top.
Imagine our disappointment when we had to miss a night in the restaurant owing to problems with the gas! However, relief was not far away as there is an excellent pub two minutes walk away serving really good food and a selection of local ales.
The rooms at Sawrey are generally average British hotel size and are clean and nicely decorated.
We will certainly return - for longer next time.More
