“Authentic gem of an auld English country pub”
Reviewed December 18, 2012

A National Trust building in quaint Near Sawrey in the Lake District, right next door to Beatrix Potter's Hillview. Warm and friendly staff, classic English pub with open fire and decorations reflecting aspects of the district. Four bedroom are upstairs, ours with a window seat opening out to lovely views of the village and surrounding fields. Both dinner, served by the fire (alternatively there is a dining room), and breakfast were hearty and delicious. Host, Anthony, was a wealth of information about the locale.

Highly recommended for a cosy olde English experience.

We stayed two nights in the bigger room at the side of the pub, which has a lovely view across the fields and fells. This is a proper pub with slate flags, a roaring fire and real ale. The ale is worth the trip alone, always featuring 5 local brews which the landlord rotates to include several from micro breweries from within the surrounding area. The fire and the lovely hearty food restore you brilliantly after a long walk.

Next door is hilltop, run by the national trust and home previously to Beatrix potter. This helps makes the pub very busyin summer and should guarantee that it retains its traditional feel rather than being tarted up for a purely foodie clientele.

The staff are all very helpful and go out of their way to make your stay memorable. We took a young springer spaniel for his first stay in a pub and were not made to feel that his antics were a problem.

Overall, this is highly recommended.

This was my favorite B&B of all the places we stayed in England. The owner was very pleasant and helpful, the food was delicious (try the sticky toffee pudding), and the rooms were charming with a lovely view. I would recommend this place to anyone. I only wish I could've stayed longer!

What a fantastic homely pub, great bar, superb friendly staff & a lovely real fire. No pretensions, just a real traditional small pub with rooms. Great breakfast - everything you could ask for in the lakes ! And to top it all dogs are welcome in the bar & staying in the rooms. Will definitely be back. Thankyou to the landlord & the staff for making us feel so welcome.

A fabulous Inn with great friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere awaits.
Found this place after being rudely rejected from nearby Cuckoo Brow Inn. They were fully booked! Well thanks to them we had a fantastic night here instead and loved it so much we re-visited it again and plan to make it a regular feature of our Lakes holidays.
The decor is stunning without being pretentious and the log fire is a must if you are lucky to get one of the cosy tables next to it.
Peroni on draft was a big hit as was the stunning home cooked food.
Our 2 little Jack Russell's loved it and even got a doggy bone each.
Was lovely to read the Inn's copy of Beatrix Potter's 'Jemima Puddleduck' as the Inn features in the book itself!! Really felt the history of the place and therefore a must for all you Potter fans.
Lovely staff too and would thoroughly recommend this lovely Inn to all.
P.s. Watch out for the big scary spider....! (Funny fake spider kept dropping down from the ceiling!! Many laughs were had by all the visitors... Great atmosphere!!)

Loved the food so much on day 1 of our visit we came back for more. Food is of the most excellent quality and size of portions are fabulous. We quickly identified how popular this place is and we made sure we got a seat by 5.15 ready for food service at 6. Nice friendly owner and staff who takes care to look after you. Wish we had places like this by us. Amazed at how busy it gets being in a tiny village but having visited now its worth it all. Highly recommend a visit just get there early for a seat if ur hungry! All positive and worth a wait. Thank you

My family and I went with a large party for Sunday Lunch. The lunch time menu is quite limited on a Sunday, which wasnt a problem as most people wanted a roast. As always Anthony and his team were as hospitable as ever and athough the pub wasnt packed the atmosphere was extremely pleasant. The log fire was on, a mixture of walkers, cyclists and families popping in and out.
Most of my party had the roast, the children having mussels off the main menu and I had the veggie option - local mushrooms with melted cheese and pine nuts. All the food was top notch, as was the beer. We ended up staying for far longer than we intended to. That sums the Tower Bank up really - once you are there you dont want to leave !. It must be one of the best country pubs in the whole of Cumbria and I can only think of one other pub in the Uk that I like as much - The Goodmanham Arms in Goodmanham, East Yorks.
