“Good location and clean”
Reviewed November 30, 2009

We spent two nights here while doing some hiking in the area. Luckily we had stocked up on food and wine in Blenheim before arriving because there is very little in this town in terms of amenities. The room was clean and had a refrigerator which was great since we had brought food. The room also had a couple of arm chairs which was nice when we were passing the time playing cards. The location was close to the lake and the conservation area information center. We were pleasantly surprised at how great the food at the restaurant was.

The motel rooms were first rate , the setting beautiful, the log fires relaxing, near the Rainbow ski areas. The walk to the nearby lake was welcome after travelling and the views were stunning.A welcome break on the road from east to west South Island.

Hi, Just got back from a 17 night stay in the South Island of New Zealand. We used two vouchers, one in Queenstown at XXXXXXXX and one in Nelson Lakes at the Alpine Lodge on Lake Rotoiki. The 3 nights spent at Alpine Lodge were by far the best value of any on the trip. We had a studio spa unit for only $133 a night (less in Australian dollars) The room was lovely, the location absolutely beautiful and the hosts Leighton and Alex friendly and helpful. The restaurant produced the best meals we ate all holiday and the bar was very well stocked. Would love to recommend the Alpine Lodge to anyone looking for beautiful, peaceful ( if slightly out of the way) accommodation in New Zealand.
Regards
Sharon Brown

I planned to stay in Alpine Lodge for 2 nights. I wanted to do lots of hiking around the lakes, and the setting is fantastic. However, after an afternoon hike and a check of the weather, it was going to be pouring down with rain the next day, and St Arnaud is pretty dead in spring in terms of things to do indoors. The lodge were very happy to pay me back for the cancelled night, and let me stay only one night - which I thought was remarkable because usually, once you've given the money you can forget it!

I stayed in the dorm. I was quite freaked out once I opened the door, because it was basically a room full of bunk beds put right next to each other (4 in total) in some kind of giant bunk bed platform - very fun for 12 years old but not exactly private. The woman at reception warned me in advance and assured me that they never actually fill the dorms up. There was only one other person in it so this turned out not to be an issue for me.

The kitchen was huge and well kitted, and there was a nice little balcony to hang out on (and to have a tent hung to dry!). I cooked so I can't vouch for the restaurant but it was there and open and had a nice sounding menu!

The staff were also very helpful in terms of local advice; I was cycling around the country and they even had cycling-specific advice in terms of route - always handy.

One bad thing though: their internet charges are just ridiculous. I think I'd worked out it was three times what everyone else usually charges, and I can't see a reason for that; just make sure you don't need to do some internet research while you're there...

All in all it's fairly standard comfort and space, but I can imagine the place being quite cramped during the ski season. Then again that would probably be the case anywhere in St Arnaud anyway...

We found Alpine Lodge a good place to stay. The self-contained unit we had was very spacious and attractive with its all-timber interior and green decor. It was clean and the staff were very amenable. We needed to use an oven as there wasn't one in the room (only rings), so we went to the Lodge kitchen and the chef took our food and cooked it for us in their oven even though they were very busy with big orders at the time. And they did it with a smile! They also made no fuss when we had to cancel one night's accommodation there due to rain....(we couldn't walk round the Lakes in the rain).
The Lodge is very close to the beautiful Nelson Lakes where you can walk, climb, boat and fish. It's a really picturesque, nature spot.

We stayed at the lodge so my husband cold participate in a bike race.

The amenities are basic, but comfortable, but it was not clean. The kids had a shower and I wiped up water from the floor to find a white towel turning grey. There were crumbs on shelves, the floor was not properly vacuumed and the glasses in the cupboards were not clean.

The setting (St Arnold) was gorgeous and the "log cabins" with two bedrooms were attractive, but I would probably stay somewhere else next time because I really like clean facilities.
