“Restaurant aside, hotel is great.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2013

We visited the hotel on a friday night in March as we were visiting family in the area. There is a huge irony here that the hotel is a three star yet we were blown away with our room but the restaurant has two AA rosettes but was a truly miserable experience. For this reason I am going to do this review based soley on the hotel and I will do a seperate review for the restaurant. We paid a little extra for a room in the main building which was massive with a four poster bed. The en-suite was also huge and came with a huge spa bath which comfortably fitted in both me and the wife. Even paying the extra the total room bill for the night was only £120 although this did not include breakfast. The bed was so comfortable and we had a truly great night's sleep and the four poster combined with traditional furniture, huge sash windows with views overlooking the gardens created a room with a great atmosphere and sense of character. I guess the only downside might be that because the building is very old there are a lot of noises throughout that can be heard in the room although the wife is quite a light sleeper and because the bed was so comfortable she did not wake once. The staff in the hotel (excluding the restaurant) were friendly from the moment we walked in and everyone from the receptionist to the bar staff were helpful and polite. The bar food was superb, if a little pricey and the atmosphere of the bar area was good although there was a funeral party here at the time and this kind of puts a little bit of a downer on the mood if you are here to try and have an enjoyable time. The spa and pool looked fairly nice but we decided that a short walk in the rain to get there was not for us on this occasion. I am amazed that this hotel is just 3 stars as I have stayed in many good quality 4 star hotels which I would compare this best western to. I would definitely stay here again although if you read my review of the restaurant you will see why I will not be eating there for a second time.

Room Tip: Definitely pay the extra for a four poster room

We spent last week-end at this hotel, just to enjoy the spa and gym facilities and a week-end away. We had a room in the main hotel and were delighted with the facilities offered. Our room, though not overly large, was almost like a brand new showroom - everything was in excellent order and spotlessly clean and modern. We found the spa facilities to be very good - the size of the sauna, steam room and pool were larger than most other hotels we have stayed at recently and was ideal for chilling out and relaxing in. The reception staff were attentive and helpful, and we ate in the dining room on Saturday evening. The food was very good, although quite expensive, but there was an excellent choice and good portion sizes. We would recommend this hotel, as we found nothing to dislike at all during our stay. It is conveniently located near to Cambridge City centre the only thing to spoil the week-end was the snow and horrible weather!

Stayed here a few times on business. Always in a room in one of the blocks, rather than main build and always happy with room. Big comfy beds, rooms spacious, clean bathroom. Staff friendly. had a treatment at spa which was good also. Only negative is mobile phone reception is really poor

We went to the quy mill for a mothers day lunch. The setting was pleasant, but too cold. At first the service was okay - we had to ask for the wine menu after being asked what we wanted to drink. Things were a little slow but it was a busy mothers day. As food arrived I noticed the staff did not quite seem to know which table ordered what - they were pleasant enough but a definite air of 'lack of experience'. The food was of good quality. After the main meal, the staff appeared to have vanished and so took quite a while to order desserts. Approx 2.5 hours later we were on our coffees - again good quality. Our son asked for a hot chocolate with cream. It arrived without cream. After walking around to try and find someone to amend this (Still no staff around), it arrived 15 mins later.
All in all the meal took far too long, the room was too cool and although friendly enough I got the impression that the waiters had never waitered before! We are regulars at The Gonville - the Best Western in cambridge. I suggest the Quy Mill staff go there to see how things should be done.

Very good value although we didn't eat at the hotel ( would recommend the Italian at Bottisham highly). The location is spacious and rural and ony a 15 minute drive away from the centre of Cambridge. The room was good with all the facilities you would expect - a bonus was the free overnight show cleaning service.

My wife and I stopped there for one night. I requested a quiet room and I was served. The room was spacious and the bed comfortable. The staff were very polite and helpful, and the place so charming that we had breakfast, lunch and dinner there rather than go to Cambridge, and they were all well worth it. Off the beaten track, I was surprised how busy the hotel was, and yet the service was irreproachable. When we visit Cambridge I know where I would rather stay!

Quy Mill is situated just off the A14 to the north east of Cambridge yet feels miles from anywhere. It's very near the Milton park and ride so is very well placed for visiting the city. Our standard twin room was in one of the converted barns - there were only four rooms in there and it was very quiet. The room (and the rest of the building) looked like it had been very recently refurbished. The decor was stylish, everywhere was spotlessly clean and the beds were ultra comfy. The breakfast area consists of a number of small rooms/areas making it nice and peaceful. The quality of the breakfast buffet was very good, including home made bread and local bacon and sausage. There are lovely walks by the river within the grounds. Would definitely stay again.
