With Lymington library shut for renovation my wife and I are picking up books in Milford on Sea. Having done the library trip - and feeling peckish we thought we would see whether there was a table at La Perle for lunch.

Good move.

We each had the daily one course special + glass of wine for £13.95. My wife had the Bavette, "blue" . I had the confit Duck leg (with a bit of extra gravy). Each came with exactly the right amount of well cooked vegetables.

We each had a glass of the house Merlot. Then we followed it with dessert and coffee.

I had a tart Tatin my wife had a vacherin - which if we have to be hypercritical might have had a smidge too much gelatine in it. But there were crunchy textures with the vacherin and with the caramel apple ice cream that went with the Tatin. Clever cooking.

The food was very good. The wine was very good. The service was excellent although I got a decaf Americano instead of decaf espresso. Our waitress was concerned to be absolutely sure that we knew that the bavette would be a slightly tough cut of meat (but tasty). We are both Francophone and Francophile so very aware of the French cuisine. But nice to be asked.

Some nice touches - the speciality bread which comes with the meal was with carrot and cumin - quite delicious. The dark chocolate fondant bon-bons that came with the coffee equally so.

For a spur of the moment lunch it was quite excellent.

We shared a perfect evening with friends at La Perle, very relaxed atmosphere & the food was superb, we wouldn't normally have 3 courses but so glad we did as the portions were just the right size & so delicious it was good to be able to try the 3 courses, this really is a little local gem in Milford.

We visited La Perle on 08 Feb 2014 as the first part of the amazingly good value Milford-on-sea Great Dining Bus (4 courses in 4 different restaurants) and had a wonderful aperitif and canapes course. An innovative champagne, homemade rhubarb syrup and vanilla aperitif - balanced flavours, refreshing, interesting. And the board of canapes was stunning: a beetroot hummus in choux pastry; white crab meat, ratte potatoes, tabasco with pickled cucumber; curried crevettes with sultanas on endive leaf; pork croquette with avocado puree, chorizo & apple; and cheese scones with figs, sheep cheese, pickled celery & cumin. (I know these details because I asked them afterwards and they kindly let me know!)

If this is the sort of thing you prepare routinely yourself at home then please do invite us round to your next dinner party. On the other hand if you want to leave this sort of thing to a professional then La Perle is more for you. The detail, delicate flavours, intricacy and diversity of these canapes was impressive - perhaps the chef was showing off as he knew we'd be visiting other local restaurants on the tour. Even as a February storm blew La Perle kept the ambience of an up-market French Bistro and was quite busy.

If you want to taste all the flavours of Milford-on-Sea do consider trying the Great Dining Bus - a bargain at just £37.50 (Feb 2014 price) all-in including drinks, so this part was absolutely stunningly good value.

We'll be going back for a full meal at La Perle - and anticipating an entire meal of similar quality.

Although we live in South Somerset La Perle is so special that we are more than happy to drive to Milford on Sea to enjoy Lionel's superb cooking.

This little bistro is a perfect gem with a very warm welcome, especially on a cold January day. On our latest visit last Friday we enjoyed tempura prawns and moules ( the broth is superb ) with home made sesame seed breads for our starters and the wonderful seven hour lamb and a tomato tatin and frites for our mains. As a non meat eater I had a good choice of fish and vegetarian dishes and thought the tatin was extremely tasty. A bottle of Merlot and coffee completed our meal. As well as the a la carte menu there is a fixed price menu and we just wished that we lived a little nearer to be able to sample the moules and frites evenings.

Thank you Emily and Lionel and all your staff for making us so welcome and we look forward to our next visit.
