“Birthday Treat”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2013

As we were celebrating my wife's ??th Birthday, she asked our friends to join us for a meal at the SJB, Cadnam.
Although it was a Monday night, we were glad we booked, as when we arrived for a table at 19.30hrs, the majority of the tables were occupied.
When you approach the pub / restaurant you can imagine what it was like years and years ago arriving on a horse drawn carriage after travelling through the New Forest, as it was once on the main road between Southampton and Ringwood and beyond. Now sadly the roads bypass the SJB, so you have to know where it is to find it. Once you have found it, then you are in for a treat. It's a lovely thatched pub and although it is part of a chain of Pubs and Restaurants (Alcatraz), there is a local pub / restaurant feel to it.
My wife and I started with a selection of Tapas (Chorizo & Olives, Marinated anchovies with roasted garlic in oil, Calamari rings with Tartar sauce and Pitta bread to mop up all the lovely juices). Our friends starters were Carrot & Coriander soup, and a Pate of Chicken livers in Whisky. All nicely presented, and tasty.
The mains for the ladies, one went for Duck leg, and the other, Pork Medallions in a wild mushroom and cream sauce. The "Boys" both chose the Fillet of Sea Bass served with prawns, spinach & pea risotto & pesto. Unfortunately the Duck came out as another plate of Pork, but the error was spotted in the kitchen before we even mentioned it, and the plate was quickly replaced with the correct dish ordered.
All food served looked and tasted good.
The selection of wine and beer was excellent, and thoroughly recommend you try this place for your self

“Great for Sunday lunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2013 via mobile

Stopped on our way to BIC at Bournemouth for concert. Very convenient just off M27. Popular on Sunday so glad we booked table for 4 people. Seated on arrival and served by helpful friendly staff. The special offer menu is slightly confusing and obviously leads most diners to think the set price applies to all the items which is not the case. Waitress had to explain to every table which seems a bit silly! That did not concern us and we ordered what we wanted. Each course was excellent and none of us could not find any fault whatsoever. Wish we lived nearer and had a local that served such quality and value. We will stop here again if we are travelling that way. Thanks again to all the staff.

“Awful roast!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2013

Visited late on Sunday for a roast, empty restaurant area, were directed to a small table for 2, I had the chicken and my husband the beef. Chicken OK, came as a quarter so quite large, the veg were hard, watery and tasteless - really awful, the potatoes looked and tasted like they had been microwaved up from the week before.
Service was good, was asked (twice) if we enjoyed it to be fair, probably because I left most of the potatoes and veg but I just felt it wasn't worth complaining about, after all yes, it was a roast, but it just was tasteless - they definitely need a new chef that cooks fresh food - this was definitely re-heated. Will be giving this place a miss, such a shame as we used to visit years ago and standards have most definitely dropped.
The waiting and bar staff are good though, nothing too much trouble and very friendly.

“Relaxing dinner with kids”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2013

We had proper, tasty pub food. The portions were massive, the kids enjoyed their food and the puddings were amazing. The ice cream I had was the best ever and I'm still thinking about it!! We stayed at the Twin Oaks b&b which is just opposite after a visit to Peppa pig world. We got to the pub at 6pm and didn't leave till 7.45- very leisurely meal. Excellent and friendly service and a smooth and light glass if Rioja.

“nice lunch at the barley”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2013

we came about two weeks ago for lunch and had a table booked in the bar area and had a great time. the place was very busy, the table service restaurant was full and the bar itself quite busy too.
the food came in good time considering how many people were there and very tasty too, it is a little bit pricy but as the manager explained its all cooked here so quite happy to pay a bit more for freshness and quality.
we were nearly exclusively served by the manager(we only saw one other young lady who helped him bringing our plates) who did a great job as he had to run the bar plus take out and clear plates.
all around great experience, we will be back.
