“Great Stay in a Great Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2013

We spent 10 days in a beautiful manor house with glorious grounds, being treated splendidly.
Our room had it's own patio overlooking flowering shrubs and a pond where the resident ducks swam. It was truly unique and very comfortable.
Steve or Jurgen greeted us in the restaurant each morning and settled us where we felt most comfortable (thank you), before we tucked into a delicious breakfast with faultless service.
Elevenses served by Zoe in the drawing room was a must, as her friendly personality and ready smile made our day.
The room service/lounge menu (both the same), was a surprise, as there was quite a wide variety of different foods to choose from (unusual in hotels these days) all delicious I might add, with Frederick or James attention to detail being a nice touch.
Staff are crucial to the smooth running of a hotel. At Tylney the staff put the welfare and comfort of their guests uppermost with nothing being too much trouble, and genuine friendliness is obvious throughout the hotel. Polite, friendly and helpful without being intrusive was the way all staff behaved - what a welcome change.
We visited Salisbury, Winchester the New Forest etc. as the hotel is ideally situated for all.
Our break was primarily to relax and unwind, and as we didn't have to lift a finger, I think you can safely say we were well chilled out by the end of our stay.
The grounds, the lakes the fresh country air - bliss.
Thank you all for a lovely relaxing stay.

Dear mancunian2000

Thank you so much for your review, it is always pleasing to have positive feedback concerning staff, but when team members are mentiioned by name it is even more rewarding - thank you for recognising Zoe, Fred and James for their attentiveness.

It is also satisfying to have such favourable comments from guests who have stayed a long time, so after 10 days you clearly had experienced all areas and would have had a real understanding of service levels.

Thank you once again for taking time to feedback in so much detail and we hope that you will chose to return to Tylney Hall at some stage in the future.

Kind regards

Mark Robinson

Having read MChalmers_12 review I confess to feeling a bit guilty as I was an attendee of one of the Wedding parties on Saturday 29th and I saw first hand that indeed weddings do create a bit more overcrowding than a weekday say BUT having stayed there for our Wedding night a couple of years ago and having spent 9 and a half hours there on Saturday I have to say that Tilney Hall is still a wonderful place to visit. We had a lovely day albeit still very hot, the staff were friendly and attentive during the wedding and at the photo call and then the evening reception in a lovely hall outside the main building was super. The staff couldn't have been more on the ball. A lovely experience and a very special day for the bride and groom. Am hoping to book for our anniversary as I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else for such a special occasion.

Room Tip: Stay in the main building, we had a lovely view of the courtyard, fabulous.

We came last weekend as a getaway from London, and we did leave feeling much more relaxed. The hotel is stunning and the grounds are well maintained. The staff are lovely, incredibly hard working and on the whole of a high standard (with some quite noticeable variations!). The only issue with the hotel, as others have noted, is that the weddings and events they host simply push it beyond capacity... every waiter is harrassed, every meal or request arrives late, we even had to queue for Breakfast in the morning (kudos again to the staff, who reasonably quickly started taking names and ushering us into the lounge, calling us up as tables were available). We took breakfast the following morning in our rooms, and a very harassed waiter arrived at 09:40 for a 09:00-09:30 delivery! And charged us an additional £10 for taking breakfast in the room! It took 40 minutes for our lunch to arrive, the order was wrong, the waiter was hard to get the attention of in the first place. Coffee out by the pool took 20 minutes to arrive, after an age of trying to flag down a waiter. Given the margins they're charging here (dinner is a £100 a head affair, rooms start at £220 a night, drinks are London prices), it does grate a little. It also strikes me as a bit of an own goal for a hotel not to put on sufficient staff to take orders on high margin food and beverages! Having booked a suite, we were also bemused to be told we had been 'upgraded' to a suite out in the orangerie, no doubt to be far from the noise of the wedding. The rooms in the new section are a little soulless, but fine.

I've given it 4 stars as we got out of the trip exactly what we wanted and didn't pay more than we were expecting for it, but the hotel really could do better.

Room Tip: Rooms in the newer section are far from the noise of weddings but a little soulless...

We stayed here for two nights at the beginning of june. Just pulling up to the building you can see you in for something fantastic, we were warmly welcomed by a finely dressed gentleman that took our bags to the room which was old fashioned but in the best way, not run down or dirty. Just the perfect size with its own little living space, molton brown products in the bathroom, soft robes on the back of the door, a beautiful view over the small lake. we were lucky to have blazing sun for the two days we visited giving us a real chance to make the most of the outdoor pool, it felt quite surreal laying outside in the hot sun and then enjoying a swim. we ordered lunch and drinks by the pool which was just the perfect treat at midday, after that we ordered drinks and snacks wherever we went around the grounds, the library, outside whilst people played croquet, in the bar.. the food was always delicious and served quickly i really recommend their caesar salad. we had massages in the spa which i have to say should have a larger waiting area with a more relaxed atmosphere, defiantly the only downside was that the spa area was basic, but still had a great massage i just think you shouldn't be able to hear conversations when your trying to relax. they did make a mistake with our spa booking as we wanted to have the treatment at the same time however they apologised for the mix up with a personal call from the manager and a bottle of champagne which was so respectable of them.
another fantastic part of Tylney Hall was getting free bikes and exploring the huge grounds such a pleasure on a hot day. I just have to say this is one of the best places ive ever stayed, the staff are all so polite and attentive, the decor is amazing especially the ceilings, the room service was beautifully presented and delicious, the dinner in the evening was formal with a great piano player and i really hope i will visit the place again the future. in my book they got everything right :) was a really special time i got to spend with my partner.

Room Tip: make sure to get a room in the main building, i imagine staying in one of the outdoor rooms wouldn...

It was a very regrettable experience visiting Tylney Hall. We wanted it to be a very special day for our parents 50th Wedding Anniversary. Afterwards we felt let down and low, instead of high and celebrated. We were annoyed what had happened and the way we were treated. As you would agree a 50th Anniversary is a special and once in a life time moment. We chose Tylney Hall as we felt it would suit the occasion.

When we arrived at Tylney Hall we were very impressed, beautiful grounds, gardens and architecture. The staff in the reception area were very helpful and showed us how we could walk around the grounds to enjoy the gardens.

Unfortunately we then came to the afternoon tea. There were things that were not particularly good to start with, for example two little tables pushed together that were different heights. This made things very awkward especially as we were given three large platters with the various foods on. After receiving these platters of food, we then waited an age for the tea to arrive. When the tea did arrive, the waitress could hardly speak English and can not have been shown how to serve a cup of tea. The chairs were also different heights to add to the awkwardness.

The head waiter though was disgraceful. He seemed to think he was above everyone. Many different types of people must visit Tylney Hall, we as always were well presented and polite. There was no reason for his bad manners and arrogance. After the stuttering service we went out side to enjoy the sunshine. Some of us had another drink, whilst two others asked for tap water after all of the tea. This same waiter, after being given the order then tried to sort out the two individuals who were having the water. He then mocked them and asked if they wanted something with it. He also seemed not to like us going outside, with yet another little comment. His attitude was appalling. I have picked a couple of examples, but his overall manner was shameful.

Also to mention at the end of the tea my parents were presented with a small tart (one that we had already tried as part of the tea) on a plate with Happy Anniversary written on the rim. I understand that this is a gesture, but to give such a little thing that we had had already eaten and between two people seemed not very well thought out. Within my party we have been many times to some beautiful places for afternoon tea and I believe you are always looking for a little bit of a wow factor. Tylney Hall very much succeed with the exterior, but is extremely let down by some of the details on the interior and especially some of the staff.

Also regarding the quality of the food, we found this unsatisfactory. The sandwiches and scones were fine (the simpler part), but it is the cakes that would probably define the food. These were, which can only be described as cheap, sugary and disappointing.

I hope I have given an insight into the disappointment that we felt that day and how let down we were by Tylney Hall on such a special day.

What a wonderful experience. I bought this as a birthday treat for a friend - gets harder every year! She thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was a scorching day and although our tea was booked for the lounge, we were able to move out on to the terrace and enjoye the weather. The service was brilliant - the poor waiter had his jacket on the whole time, the choice of sandwiches, cream cakes and scones were delicious and the champagne was first class - so good in fact, we ordered a second glass! Thorough recommend.

Peaceful, relaxing and luxurious, with fantastic service, food, gardens and accommodation.
Nothing is too much trouble for the staff - even changing our room from the 2nd to 1st floor because the dormer windows on the 2nd floor let in too much light.
This is my second stay Tylney and I certainly plan to go again.

Room Tip: Avoid 2nd floor if you prefer your room to be "blacked out" when the curtains are drawn or...
