Visited in conjunction with a voucher deal ( half price for night with dinner bed & breakfast) .
We upgraded to superior room, and were advised that as the grill restaurant had no other guests they would upgrade us to the fine dining restaurant.
Pluses - stunning location , beautiful room( certainly not chilly in spite of the old leaded windows) , largest and most comfortable bed I have slept in for year, great grounds and easy access to thurstaton common for lovely walks whatever the season. Great log fires to enjoy your pre and especially post dinner drinks with attentive service. Plus nice chocolates and a great tray of tea rather than the little kettle and tea bag affair that you normally get.
Only slight gripes, the ornate dining room had only one other table occupied on a Saturday night so lacked atmosphere, whilst we had been upgraded to a set menu in the dining room, we upgraded again to the taster menu, but where then told our " voucher " couldn't be used to take money of that menu so we either paid full price for the taster menu or had the set menu for free.
The bathroom in the superior room was very modern with an LCD tv and a steam shower, however this was slightlyvoutvof keeping with the room and hotel and may have been better with luxury retro fittings( only my opinion) as it slightly lacked the wow factor. Also I'm pretty technologically savvy but the steam shower was a nightmare to work and could have done with instructions closer to hand.
A great venue for a romantic break

Dear Woodychester1,

Thank you for taking the time in sharing your experience of your break here and we are glad to hear you both enjoyed your romantic break. It is always great to hear your feedback, especially regarding the tasting menu and all your comments have been passed onto our head chef Stewart and his team, who have been thrilled.

As I'm sure you will understand, January is sometimes much quieter than other months in the year and so we hope you can return again to dine with us at a much more popular time, where you can truly enjoy the Hillbark dining experience.

It was a pleasure to have you both here at Hillbark, and we do hope you return again shortly.

Kindest regards,

Claire Jones

Stayed at the hill bark on a voucher scheme of room and meal half price, however uprgraded room and went for tasting menu. Hotel was stunning, certainly didn't find the large room chilly, clearly old fashioned touches but the bed was huge and the most comfortable I've slept in for a long time. The bathroom was modern with an LCD television and a steam shower, I'm no Luddite and techno literate but I did struggle to make the steam shower work , better instructions needed!
. We had been moved/ upgraded from the grill restaurant to the set menu in the fine dining as we were told that we were the only guests in the grill .The food in the fine dining was excellent if a little expensive as our prepaid meal " voucher "was not knocked off our bill for the taster menu as it would have been for the set menu, slightly annoying but we wanted to try the taster menu.Only issue was that only one other table occupied so a little" lonely" in the dining room and a lack of atmosphere. That being said lovely log fires for our post prandial drinks.
All in all a very lovely place for a romantic walk with great grounds to meander through and out onto thurstaton common.
Well worth a trip especially especially for couples .

I cannot express how highly I would recommend this place. We visited the spa and it was incredible. The atmosphere and ambience was enchanting from the moment we arrived.
Our treatments in the spa were so relaxing and much attention was paid to us.
The staff were so well trained and polite. They kept checking on us and even gave us a free tour of the place to see the bedrooms and all the different dining rooms, including hidden gems and history of the beautiful house.
I am definitely telling my friends and family (who don't already know) about this place!

We had our wedding reception at the Hillbark earlier this year and although I have never written a review on any hotel before I felt compelled to write a review on this fantastic hotel. Not only is the venue stunning, hidden away in Royden Park but the staff were outstanding and made our day so special.
Rebecca, Neil, Peter, James and the rest of the team ensured that our day ran smoothly and were very professional and nothing was too much trouble.
We organised our wedding from Australia via email and Skype and was immediately impressed with the level of professionalism. All emails and queries were answered straight away and we felt very comfortable that our wedding day reception was in good hands!
On arriving for our meeting we were greeted outside by one of the friendly staff and taken inside to sit by the roaring fire. We had a tasting session two weeks before the wedding and the food also was of a very high standard, so much so that we found it very difficult to choose our menu! On the day the chef and his team did an outstanding job and all our guests commented on the high standard of the food, he even added a personal touch to our desserts which was a lovely surprise.
This venue speaks for itself, with the Tudor house and Grand hall as the setting for your wedding breakfast it certainly makes it a magical day. We had our evening reception in the marquee which had a completely different feel but yet again finished to the highest quality. You really do feel like you're dancing under the stars.
This hotel maybe a little more expensive than any other in the area but when you get the setting and the kind of service you get from the staff it is well worth it for your special day. All our guests commented on the setting, the food and most of all the friendly and accommodating staff.
We also eat in The Grill Restaurant the following night and found the food and service to be of the very same high standard.
We will be back for our anniversary.

The hotel is stunning , on arrival we were greeted at the entrance and after finally finding our booking as they had our name wrong we we shown to a 'suite' room . the room was spacious , sported a double jacuzzi bath with a tv in the bathroom and a mirror above the bed! ooh eer!

Being an old hotel though and it snowing outside the heating struggled to cope and the room was chilly.

We used the on-site spa which was excellent , high quality treatments in a lovely setting.

We chose to dine in the 'Grill' but were moved as the hotel was quiet to the 'fine dining room' , expectations rose slightly only to be dashed in afraid. I should say we were only 1 of 4 table dining so i am not sure the chef hadn't taken the night off!
The menu is small and the descriptions leave you guessing what your going to get! for pudding we ordered 'Chocolate' which was described as 'Chocolate, Chocolate'.
The starter arrived and was burnt , not just slightly . I know this place is famous for weddings but they had done a cremation on this . It was unrecognisable and was sent back , Obviously embarrassed staff did their best to make emends with a free drink , but when the same starter arrived at the table next to us , it was a lovely bright dish that looked nice , Unfortunately they complained too about it , I think they had missed the main ingredient of Gnocci , Gnocci !
I was told when ordering that I should try the steak here ! so i did , ordering a rib eye , medium rare. I love my steak, but not here, It was tough and overcooked . It had the resemblance of having been cooked from frozen , the hand cooked chips had been in the same oven as the starter and were also pronounced dead.( black and dry)
I hope the proper chef reads this , as he/she needs to consider who is left in the kitchen , cooking under their name! because they were rubbish ( so much so we didn't order any cooked breakfast the next day!)
That said the staff, manager and bar were absolutely excellent , nothing too much trouble , a friendly smile and attentive to our needs .
I would recommend the Hotel for a lovely relaxing break, in elegant surroundings. Unfortunatley though I would never eat there again .

Room Tip: Avoid rooms over-looking the Wedding marquee . single glazing and kitchen fans .

We were there as wedding guests on 28/12/12. The hotel looked absolutely stunning and the staff were very attentive and professional. The food was beautiful and plentiful an we were even offered second helpings. The room looked amazing and everything ran effortlessly. The reception was in the marquee which was breathtaking and the bar staff were great. The hog roast was yum and having had the hog roast at my own wedding in the Leverhulme the previous year I had high expectations! We had a great day and the only downfall was the lack of champers I could drink due to being the designated driver!

Spent New Year's Eve and stayed overnight at the hotel. The location of lovely which is the middle of the Royden Park Estate and the hotel itself has been lovingly restored to his former glory. We were met at the door and helped into the foyer with our luggage and the reception staff made us very welcome. We had been upgraded to the bridal suite which was just fantastic access to which was via the minstrels gallery! The room itself was again beatifully restored and had a lovely modern bathroom with a spa bath. The lounge part of the room had an old stone fireplace.
We dined in the fine dining restaurant which offered 8 courses which were all very well presented and tasted wonderful. The restaurant manager Mathieu was very helpful with the wine choice and attended to all our needs without being intrusive. The resident pianist was nice to see and such a change as most hotels these days have done away with the resident pianist and use piped music instead. As residents we were also invited to the house party which again was of a very high standard. There were the obligatory fireworks of course, but these were done to music in the lovely grounds of the hotel. And just as you were getting a bit peckish in the early hours bacon rolls were handed around to all the partying guests.
The only thing I missed at this hotel was a swimming pool, but this may be something the management may consider in the future, providing of course the building is in keeping with the rest of the beautifully restored hotel.
All in all, a great stay in a great hotel.
