Good points:
- Very large portions
- Broad range of options on the menu
- Good ambience/atmosphere, particularly on weekends
- Not bad in terms of prices

Bad points:
- Quality of food is average, no better than a lot of other similar Italian restaurants
- There's not always much parking that close

In summary, it's recommended for a good evening out; for a really special occasion I think you could do better.

A very popular, reasonably priced, Italian restaurant. The food is good and the menu varied. The portions however can be large.

Many of the reviews on Va Pensiero are polarised - people love it or hate it. So, we'd like to provide an objective assessment based on our recent visit. The restaurant is large and crowded and is consequently either 'noisy' or quite 'buzzy' depending on your point of view. Staff did not welcome us promptly - we stood waiting in the foyer while 2 staff discussed another client's order on a computer without even acknowledging us - this was a bad start, but we let it ride. Service itself was slow and surly, but just about OK, despite the fact you get the feeling they are not enjoying working there and are probably therefore being exploited. They were not happy to serve nor did they appear to be working as a team. Some were downright morose. Few seemed to be Italian. Tables were acceptably clean, but without tablecloths or linen napkins. So, to the food. Menu choices were standard Italian bistro/pizzaria, with fewer seafood options than one might expect (no linguine alla vongole, for example) but a decent range of meat and fish as well as pizzas and veg/side orders. The food itself was more quantity than quality - the veal was tough, the chicken a little tasteless and the olive sauce accompanying the salmon seemed to have been dumped on the poor fish in one big splurge. We didn't stay for dessert though had imbibed some wine - the waiter brought us the wrong red, but at least it was uncorked at the table, though not with label uppermost, nor were the ladies served first...you get the picture. We paid around £100 for 3 people for starters and desserts with drinks including wine and some bread. This said, there are some 20 pieces of modern art adorning the walls - we really liked some of these paintings and it helped to take our minds off criticising the inadequacies of the food. For another 10-15%, we'd advise people go to L'Olivo in Ware - a much better Italian.

I went with a friend on a saturday evening at 9pm. I had a pizza Fiorentina which was quite good and some house red wine and later, a coffee which was not at all bad. The coffee was extremely strong. The waiter was very friendly and charming and the service prompt. What spoilt it for me slightly was the noise level. It's quite bare inside so the sound of the full restaurant in full flow made conversation difficult. The bill was £22 per head including tip, which was fine.
