My wife and I booked a two night stay at The Lugger with a meal, cream tea, and a bottle of bubbly included in the price. We arrived early as the trip west went better than expected with no traffic. We were at first struck by how beautiful Portloe was! The service and friendly nature of the staff was apparent from the moment we arrived and were shown to what was listed as a standard room, but would be on a par with an upgraded room in many Hotels. Everything in the room was to a very high standard and was furnished beautifully.

The cream tea was taken in the afternoon on the balcony, which is in a stunning location overlooking the sea and a few small working fishing boats. This was one of the most relaxing locations I could possibly imagine.

The dinner was brilliant, in terms of taste and service. The Dining area of the Hotel is also gifted with wonderful views of the sea. This was one of the nicest meals I have been able to share with my wife and it was made even better by the location.

Overall, however, what makes this Hotel so good, is the extra little touches. Despite only being small (which is part of the charm) the Lugger operates to a standard associated with much larger city Hotels, but with a much more personal service not associated with larger Hotels. We received complimentary home made lemon drizzle cake in our room on the second day, as well as getting a short bed time story left on the pillow with the turn down service.

I cannot wait to return to the Lugger and would recommend it to everyone!

Having not been to Cornwall before booked two days luxury at The Lugger not disappointed ! the two days felt like a week! The location is stunning and what I thought Cornwall typically should be, working fishing cove rugged coastline (visited Fowey the busy fish & chips version of Cornwall so left rapidly!) The personal attention and friendliness of ALL the staff at the hotel (the chefs turned out in force when we were there to push a guests grounded car off the car park entrance steps where a narrow turn had caught the driver out!) and the little personal touches in the rooms and throughout the hotel make the total experience you seek from a luxury hotel.
The rooms are comfortable and well appointed in two buildings around the ample private courtyard car park, you really are on the cove and the dining room and terrace are a great place to unwind completely. The food at the hotel was superb, breakfast good and filling and if you fancy a change of scene The Ship a small stroll up the road has good local beers and food
with a nice little beer garden to eat in. All thoroughly recommended and will be back but will avoid travelling in and out of Cornwall at weekends in August !!!

We had dinner here while on holiday in July, we were not staying at the hotel but in a cottage nearby so I can't comment on the bedrooms or the rest of the hotel.

We had drinks on the terrace over looking the attractive working harbour, it was just at the start of a warm and sunny spell so was idyllic.

The staff were attentive and friendly, the food was a very interesting mix of flavours (Vindaloo monk fish stands out) and was very enjoyable,

The dinning room was comfortable and also had views out on to the harbour.

This was our first time at The Lugger and we will defiantly be back. Where do I start? From the moment we arrived you could tell this was going to be a fantastic place to stay. The Lugger is situated in a really beautiful spot, in a small secluded cove, which as there is no beach means it isn't overflowing with families. In other words quiet! We were made to feel extremely welcome and the staff were excellent from the cleaners to the management, you were always treated with a smile. Service was perfect from the waiting on staff and we had a chat with the chef one evening, who obviously loved his job.
We had room 312 and I've noticed in the reviews someone has put don't have this room. We found this room really good. It was in the block away from the main hotel and yes it may have been a little on the small side, but we had two windows with sea views, a lovely big comfy bed, plenty of storage space and the bathroom to was a little small but adequate. As I say in most of my reviews I don't go away to spend all my time in the bedroom.
The food was superb. Beautifully presented, and we're talking quality not quantity here. There was an excellent choice for breakfast, I had a a cheese sandwich for lunch one afternoon which again, was beautifully presented. The highlight was the evening meal, we ate in two evenings and couldn't fault either meal. We did have to wait a little longer between courses on the busiest night but this wasn't a problem. I would prefer to have a meal that has time spent on it.
There were some lovely finishing touches too, the joke and weather forecast placed in the room each evening, along with the hot chocolate. Fresh towels every day, which is something you don't get very often these days, just made you feel special. There was a wedding held on one of our days and we were still made to feel like important guests.
The only criticism was that the carpet in the communal areas did really need replacing as this was badly stained in places
All in all we had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay. Sitting on one of terraces watching the sea was just what we needed and as I said at the start we will definitely be back, sooner rather than later I hope.

Room Tip: Room 101 did look interesting, think it may have been the old boat house, but we were pleased with 3...

So we can't comment on the accommodation but the meal we had with the stunning backdrop of the setting sun over a small Cornish fishing cove was excellent. Not quite 5 stars - The Cove Maenporth is reserved for that as the benchmark - but still memorable. Interesting reading other reviews, which all goes to show we are all different. What we DON'T like is pyramids of food that you have to wade through, piling on the calories in the process. Much rather have the very imaginative presentation the Chef here uses with a simple small menu to choose from accompanied by service that struck just the right balance between attentiveness without being obsequious or intrusive. My wife had hake in a delicate cauliflower sauce followed by scallops and I had breaded pigs cheeks with a light mustard accompaniment followed by fillet of beef. All faultless except the beef was slightly underdone for my taste but would have been fine for others. The fascinating range of fresh, presumably home baked, bread accompanied by a choice of butter pats livened by garlic or bacon or sea salt made a good start to the meal and the wine list was fine.

Room Tip: If you book ask for a table overlooking the sea. Or if the weather is really good eat on the outside...
