“Great break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 18, 2013

Stayed here for 2 nights in a room in the main hotel. The room was great, clean and plenty big enough, with views of the tiny harbour. The meals were excellant, well prepared, visually appealing and tasty. Breakfasts were good, and the eggs benedict the best my wife had all holiday, no mean feat as our next stop was Gidleigh Park.

Service was freindly and efficient

Overall a great stay

We have travelled a lot throughout Britain and we´ve always tried to be easy customers and not to make complaints about irrelevant things but this time it was too much. The village where the hotel is located is beatiful, but the service and the manager were horrible. He treated us as not worth customers since the beginning and on top of that we´ve been charged £6 for a pot of tea bags! When we told him that it was very expensive for just 2 tea bags of the cheapest tea with hot water, he seemed not to care at all and he remained staring at us with an indifferent attitude.
Definitely not worth the visit of this hotel.

We had come to Portloe as we had heard it was a lovely picturesque village. After looking round the village we wanted to take in the view with a cup of tea from the hotel overlooking the bay. The board outside the hotel advertised non-residents as being welcome for morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.

The front reception desk was un-manned so we proceeded to the dining room, asking the waiter if we were able to take a seat by the window, to which he indicated was ok.

After making our order, we could hear ourselves being discussed in the reception in a derogatory manner by the gentleman who I assume was the manager and the waiter. The man I assume to be the manager subsequently came to our table and was exremely brusque with us, asking if we were residents, and why we had come in. He then proceeding to take away all of the cutlery and crockery on the table, and sugar, thus lessening the enjoyment of the remainder of the pot of tea.To reiterate, the service of the waiter himself was perfectly fine, it was the brusque manner which we were treated with by the manager which soured the experience.

All of this left us feeling very un-welcome in the establishment.

I would recommend visiting Portloe to anyone, just don't expect friendly service from the manager at the Lugger hotel if you are a non-resident.

What a warm and professional welcome! Totally worth the long haul from London, the food was amazing, the service faultless and the scenery breathtaking. Russell and his staff were too nice! The rooms are of a really high standard, there are lots of little terraces to sit and gaze out over the sea with a pre or post prandial drink!

A perfect spot for our wedding anniversary, a great location ideal for coastal walks and plenty of small villages nearby to visit. The hotel staff were so very helpful and nothing was too much, the menu was excellent particularly the breakfasts. Very relaxing.

Thank you for a lovely stay, such a beautifully run hotel with polite 'can't do enough for you' colleagues. Beautiful views of the sea from this active fishing community. The only thing I'd say is there is no mobile reception, however the free use of the phone in your room and excellent wifi easily outweigh this. Thank you
