Stopped at Portlo over a weekend and thanks to Tripadvisor we were made aware of The Ship. It is more a little country pub restaurant than a pub, so booking in advance is definitely recommended. Having said that the landlord and staff make every effort to accommodate but the premises are small. The menu range and food quality were excellent as was the pricing, if you add to this the quality of the beers delivered by an old fashioned beer engine and a landlord who knows how to keep his products ---- what more could you want? definitely worth a visit.

“Just a bit disappointed!”
Reviewed June 29, 2014

We had popped in here a few years back whilst walking the SW path, and enjoyed a pint and a pasty. So, when booking our holiday cottage just up the road we thought we,d be in heaven. We popped in on our second evening. Have to say the staff could not be faulted and were very accommodating, friendly and helpful even down to finding us a table in doors, on a vey muggy night, when the critters were clearly out for a nights feast themselves in the very appealing beer garden of the pub! Two of us had oven baked cod with chorizo. Probably, 5 minutes too long in the oven as the fish had lost its juiciness and the chorizo was clearly from a Morrisons pack, or similar and was not too exciting. As the menu board outside says "tomorrow's menu is still in the sea", this was a little disappointing. The wife had a very creamy and tasty fish pie (mashed potato top), which was very nice, but, and perhaps I am being picky, you do need to ensure with such a dish that all fish bones are removed to ensure the meal can be completely enjoyed. Overall, I would come back, some of the other food which came out whilst we were there looked exceptional, but it was not what I remembered and for the rest of our week we did not return, but to be fair when doing our cottage holidays, we really do enjoy eating (and drinking, of course!) back at the ranch.

Okay, so I was a 'tourist' but theres no need for such high prices. £15 for a steak is above average, really, but then the rest of the portions of salad, chips etc, was soooo small it made it even worse. Probably wouldn't eat here again even though the food was tasty and it came quickly served by decent staff. I rarely leave a place after eating steak, hungry! Poor value for money.

Staying locally, this was recommended as a good place to try for fish - they say "tomorrow's menu is in the sea". Unfortunately, the little devils weren't biting so much, so just one fish option on the brief menu, but everything was beautifully cooked and delicious. So nice, we went back for the Sunday Carvery lunch, which was superb and very reasonably priced.
