“What a shame!”
Reviewed February 6, 2013

We visited this pub today after reading reviews on this website. What a shame! Firstly, the owner (Mark) didn't even look to speak to us when we walked in, he was writing the menu on the board and we felt like we shouldn't have been there. The barman, however, was absolutely excellent and made us feel very welcome, so we decided to stay. The menu contained about 6 choices of food, all of which were fish or gammon (ham). We chose the fish. We were the only 4 in the pub but it took an hour for the food to come to our table. First impressions were good, the fish was huge, overlapping the plate. This was soon a problem though as it was so greasy it was dripping fat all over the table. Anyway, I put my serviette under the end of it to soak it up - job done. Although the fish looked big, it was mostly batter and the fish was a very thin slither sandwiched between the top and bottom thick batter. I know it was out of season, but we were bitterly disappointed in the food. To sum up - the barman couldn't have been nicer, the food certainly could have been!

“Really nice pub”
Reviewed October 19, 2012

We stayed at The Ship Inn as we were walking the coast path. Our room was spacious, very clean and comfortable. We ate there in the evening and were really pleased we did. The food was really delicious, the fish pie was fantastic and the steak and ale pie was very tasty indeed. Really good local ales and the pub has a brilliant atmosphere. Our breakfast was really nice and well cooked, just what we needed before a long walk. We would definitely stay again when in Portloe.
