Review

I spent a very pleasant five nights at the Red Lion. The accommodation was comfortable, the setting beautiful and the staff made me feel really welcome. Breakfast was delicious and there is a good choice of reasonably priced food for evening meals. It was lovely to be greeted by a friendly face and a freshly cooked breakfast first thing. There is also a room service menu if you don't want to eat in the bar in the evening. A tranquil location with rooms in a separate block so no noise from the pub to disturb at night. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to a friend and would certainly stay there again if in the area.

I was excited to 'introduce' a friend to the Red Lion last Sunday but the experience made me feel like I should revise my initial glowing review ...
Although the location is lovely, the service, lighting and seating need attention. After deliberating where to sit, we settled for the least bad option of a table under a very bright light. Our simple order was fumbled and although there was evidence of a fireplace, it wasn't lit - and the heating clearly wasn't on either - so I had to keep my jacket on to stay warm.
Disappointed, we moved swiftly on to The Dolphin Pub around the corner for our next drink, and dinner.

Stayed here overnight after attending the Brockham bonfire event. Did not expect too much from a pub B&B and we were pleasantly surprised. The very warm welcome proves again that hospitality is all about the attitude of the hosts. We have stayed in some luxurious hotels with amazing facilities that did not feel any where near as comfortable as the Red Lion due to the warmth of the staff. We enjoyed a lunch in the pub and received very professional and genuine service. Food was delicious and hot.
The accommodation is in a block to the rear of the pub in a quiet area. We had a comfortable room upstairs with everything you could want for a one night stay. It was very clean and quiet with blackout blinds providing a setting for a good nights sleep which is what a hotel room should deliver.
Checkout is at 10 am but staff said we could book breakfast for that time . Full English breakfast was included in the price. Although friendly, Sunday morning service was no where near as professional as the evening. Breakfast tables were left uncleared for the whole of the breakfast and although the food was good, it was slow arriving, otherwise this would be a 5 star review. That said, The Red Lion provided an excellent value for money stay which we enjoyed and we recommend it.

This lovely old pub is under new management and what a difference it had made! From the moment you walk in you are made to feel very welcome, there is a nice warm feel to the place and the staff are very friendly. I just popped in for a nightcap, but have no hesitation in returning to try out the restaurant next time, watch this space!!!!!

Two of us had a late lunch at the Red Lion. I believe it recently had new owners. The food and service was very good although late in the afternoon it wasn't very busy. The pub garden and outside eating area was very attractive and the atmosphere in the restaurant was cosy and friendly. Tasty, wholesome, well presented pub grub which we felt was very good value.

We have stayed at the Red Lion several times over the past couple of years as it has suited us perfectly while visiting my mum: clean, comfortable & quiet rooms, a simple breakfast tray so you can have a lie-in, friendly service and all attached to a great pub/restaurant.

The rooms are naturally just as good but breakfast is now served in the pub. This would be fine if it was a good breakfast but it was a strange mixture: nicely cooked scrambled eggs with toast made from lovely bread but the accompanying mushrooms seemed to have been baked(!) or microwaved until dry and the bread was smeared with some kind of awful low fat spread. No butter? Or a choice whether or not to butter one's toast? Nice tea in a pot (for my partner) and dreadful instant coffee (for me). Again a cafetiere and decent ground coffee is not much to ask.

Finally the food at the pub is not what it was - it's decent pub grub but not a patch on our previous visits. That said the new staff are friendly and helpful and perhaps things will improve once they are settled in.

Room Tip: If you like your privacy ask for a first floor room. All the rooms seem to be a high standard though...
