“Great Stay”
Reviewed August 21, 2014

My partner and I stayed at the Hotel for 2 nights the 10th and 11th August. I have to say I was a little apprehensive after reading some of the reviews. However, the staff were all very friendly and helpful, especially the Manager Ian and the waiter who served us at dinner in the dining room. We stayed in room 19, could have done with a lick of paint but it was perfectly adequate.

The breakfast was excellent, served on nice hot plates and plenty of it. No request was too much trouble. We also ate Dinner one evening and the food was outstanding.

Would definatly stay again

Myself and my two sisters have just returned from a two night stay at the Healey hotel( Alder house hotel) and were pleasantly surprised with what we found. We had rooms 22/23 on the first floor and had nice views across the woodland garden. It was also very peaceful with no traffic noise and meant we had good nights sleep. The breakfast each morning was delicious and set us up for the day. The evening meal was also from a good selection on the menu and delicious. Staff front of house, waiting on and our chef were extremely friendly and approachable and we had a good laugh with all of them. The only downside concerned housekeeping. Although it was clean and tidy we did run out of milk, coffee and toilet rolls and had to ask for more, and the towels were marked (although clean) which distracted from the rest of the good work. They were also not changed for the two days we were there and felt this side let the hotel down slightly. However we all said we would return to this hotel as overall we were pleasantly surprised!

Disgusting refused to stay, look at reviews for the Alder House Hotel and Woodland Boutique Cottage. Took three days to get our money back. Please leave well alone! Trip Advisor and other booking companies please remove this hovel, it is not fair to expect families to have to find alternative accommodation at the last minute.

We purchased a Wowcher deal to stay in the hotel's cottage as a party of 6, with 2 children and booked it for February 2014. A couple of days before we were due to go there we received an email from the hotel cancelling apparently due to a tree falling on the roof of the cottage and causing a leak. This was obviously disappointing and at such short notice as my husband also lost a weeks holiday that he had already booked. However, we understood that these things happen.

We managed to rearrange to when my friends kids were off on 21st April 2014 and so booked time off work (we were staying for 3 nights). As we were staying in the cottage we bought lots of food and drink for the 3 night stay and drove to the venue. When we got there the man on Reception looked shocked and asked us to wait in the bar area. A short while later he explained that the cottage was already booked and had guests in there until Wednesday morning.

Obviously, we were disappointed and angry. The guy we spoke with Robert (who had apparently only started working there two weeks ago) said that the manager was due in, in approx. 1 hours time so we could discuss this with him so we decided to wait. Unfortunately, the manager decided not to come in and Robert was left to sort out the situation himself. Robert decided to offer us 3 rooms for the next 2 evenings in the hotel and then we could spend the last evening in the cottage when the other family left. Although not ideal, it was a solution and we also didn't want to let the kids down by having to drive back home. As we had bought lots of food Robert kindly said we could keep this in their fridge and use their kitchen to make our meals.

Robert and the lady chef (sorry I can't remember her name), were really helpful and couldn't do enough for us. They were very apologetic and this was greatly appreciated.

That evening we were making the meal in the kitchen and the manager or owner came in with someone else and were stood at the reception area talking about us. He was saying things like "they have already had 3 rooms off us now they are using our kitchen etc. etc." They were quite happy discussing this for a good long while when me, my husband and friends all walked passed them. It made us feel really uncomfortable and if it wasn't for the children we would have spoken with them about this. We found out that one of the men was the owner and he walked into the bar a couple of times, stared at us and then walked off. No introduction, apology, anything.

Another guy, Mark (I think) said that he had sent us an email to my phone on Friday cancelling the booking (again like in February), however I explained that I only have a pay as you go phone and don't receive internet/emails on my phone so never got an email. Also, I was away with my husband in London until the Sunday evening before our stay here and didn't get chance to check my computer. Again, though cancelling something the Friday before our holiday is not acceptable as we had all booked time off work. We didn't receive any phone calls either to check we had received the email.

The family already in the cottage checked out a day earlier so we were able to use the cottage Tues & Wed, which was much better. The cottage was nice and modern, although the floor in the bathroom appeared to have fallen through and was covered up by lino.

Luckily we enjoyed the rest of our stay and the cottage was more than adequate for us. I would like to say a big thankyou for the staff at the hotel who were very approachable and friendly. However, we cannot forgive the rudeness of the owner, other management staff (we don't know the names of).

If the owner and manager (young lad with suit on) realised that working in the hospitality business is about being hospitable to your customers then the business will go a long way. It's not rocket science!

The only reason I didn't give it a terrible rating was that the saving grace was when we got to stay in the cottage.

Room Tip: The rooms to the right of the hotel passed reception and up the stairs appear to have been recently...

Just arrived back from The Healey hotel we had room 18 which was ok but could do with new pillows for the bed.The furniture also looked a bit tired in the bedroom, the bathroom was very nice but there was a musty smell there all the time no matter how long we left the fan on it was still there. We went on a KGB deal so the offer had a 3 course dinner included when we went in for our meal the member of staff that served us said "this is a 2 course meal" I didn't dispute this but it was a 3 course meal.It was a good job the food was very good and big portions and we wouldn't have had a dessert. The breakfast were also good but could do with having a list of what they have for the hot breakfast instead of the waiter saying what they have.If there was a list you could just look and then tell the waiter what you required. With a few little queaks I think this hotel could be better and other things around the hotel. We still enjoyed our break it didn't spoil it for us.

Room Tip: Ask for room 18 York suite or any that you see on reviews
