“Rainham Marshes”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 22, 2012

This is a fantastic nature reserve near Purfleet, Essex. The visitor centre has very knowledgeable staff who will tell you what to look out for, the food is great, the volunteers are friendly and the wildlife is stunning. A real gem for birders, attracting many local and national scarcities including Bearded reedling and hobby, and there's a great array of plants such as Deadly nightshade. It is definitely best visiting in the winter, however, as birds will not be flocking in large numbers over the summer and can be difficult to see. its a beautiful place and great just for a walk, and its adventure playground and spotters guides make it very popular with families. I visited with my mum (I'm thirteen) and had a brilliant day out, including a walk along the Thames in the evening and a cake at the visitors centre. Highly recommended.

“More than just the R.S.P.B.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 11, 2012

I know the R.S.P.B. site is the attraction nder review, but I would like to make visitors aware of the fantastic surrounding area. The site can be accessed, by foot, from Rainham's historic Village, with its ancient GI Church and N.T. Rainham Hall, plus other GII listed buildings - all worth a visit, particularly The Ship cafe where lovely home made food is available.
Cross the footbridge in Ferry Lane, adjacent Rainham railway station, walk across the marshes in Ferry Lane (keeping to the newly constructed footpaths), then cross Coldharbour Lane to the riverside car park. Continue along the riverside path, where the concrete barges and the 'diver' can be seen. The diver was constructed of metal building strips and is the only structure standing in the Thames. It has been called the most significant piece of public art in East London. As you approach the R.S.P.B. site you experience oustanding views of the QE11 Bridge and the foreshore of Aveley Bay. Continue through the site to the visitor centre then take the footpath on the right, over the bridge, which leads through the Garrison Housing Estate to the Purfleet Heritage Museum. This little museum which is in an old gunpowder magazine, is a gem. You can have a coffee/refreshments here - much cheaper than R.S.P.B. prices. Being Rainham residents, we do this walk on a regular basis.
PLEASE NOTE THAT 'HERITAGE MUSEUM' OPENING HOURS ARE RESTRICTED, AS IT IS MANNED BY VOLUNTEERS. PLEASE CHECK BEFORE VISIT.

“Day out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 21, 2012

Rainham marshes are run by the R.S.P.B and it is a great place for a day out, the walkways take you around the marshes in safety and there is always something to catch your eyes. After your walk you can sit back in the cafe and have a well earned cup of tea and perhaps a delicious bowl of homemade soup.
