“Great place-Not sure about the 5 star rating”

We travelled as a group of mature women on a really special deal; two nights' bed and breakfast and one evening meal; plus free entry to Kylemore Abbey, and a round of golf, if we were so inclined.

We arrived quite early - before 2pm, but we were made very welcome indeed...none of this rubbish about not checking in until after 3pm! Basic, but comfortable rooms. Gorgeous beds..they use feather mattress toppers...oh, they are so lovely to sink into at night! The staff are genuinely warm and welcoming, helpful with local knowledge, and chatty. The evening meal was really very good...a lavender and seaweed mousse being a really exotic dessert..a delightful creation that slid down easily.

Service was attentive, without being overbearing. Breakfast is cooked to order; no buffet here, so your breakfast arrives hot and fresh. On the second morning there, the staff seemed a little overwhelmed by numbers, as the dining room was almost full. Things were overlooked, or forgotten. Everyone was very nice and apologetic though.

The hotel is set outside Galway, on the N59 - the route to Clifden, which is over an hour's drive away, but it is easy enough to order a taxi to the City Centre. There is a wonderful golf course, and the grounds are fabulous.

The one thing which this hotel is lacking is a leisure centre; or at least a beauty salon. There are lovely cosy rooms to sit and chat in, turf fires, big, squashy armchairs, the smell of burning turf is everywhere, and it is one of the memories we took away with us.

The staff make this place special; they must be hand-picked! A place we will definitely return to.

Spent an over night recently in the Glenlo Abbey Hotel. We purchased a deal on a promotions website offering a special deal. The deal consisted of bed and breakfast and a 4 course meal for €124. Upon arrival we were greeted by friendly professional staff who insisted on carrying our bags to our room. When we arrived at our room which was basement floor level, we were instantly disappointed with the dated shabby bedroom. It was clean and had all the extras one would expect , eg, tea and coffee making facilities, bottled water etc. The bed however was the most comfortable we have slept in. Divine. I feel due to our promotion offer we may have been offered a standard room. We made our way to the bar and again staff were friendly and professional.
After our drink we decided to dine , and we were offered a set menu which was part of the deal. If you wanted to upgrade your meal for steak it was extra, which we paid for. The house wine was €40 a bottle which we felt a little expensive but we tried and I regret it was not the nicest.

The steaks were cooked to perfection. When it came to our desert, they ran out of what my husband ordered ,when we asked for an alternative from the full menu, we waited 20 mins and it still had not arrived, so we left and went to bed.The waiter was very apologetic and did offer to have it sent to our room, but by then we just wanted to retire.

Dining room has lovely character, staff were very attentive, breakfast was excellent, very large comfortable bed, however the room and hotel decor did let it down. I find it disappointing that when a promotion is offered a less superior room and menu is offered.

We loved Glenlo Abbey! Everyone who worked there was very friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The location was nice - away from the hustle and bustle of Galway but still an easy cab ride away. There are multiple rooms to hide-away for afternoon tea or to curl up in front of the fire and read a book. Common areas were beautiful. The free breakfast was extensive and delicious, and the dinner we had at Glenlo was one of the best we had in Ireland. Loved having a pub right downstairs. The standard guest rooms could use a face-lift - they were large and clean, but a little outdated. Even still, we would definitely stay there again and recommend it to friends and family!

Stayed for one night at the end of February. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel, everyone from the Reception staff to the Housekeeping staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The dining room has a perfect atmosphere to unwind. The tables are a good distance apart, the food is great. The restaurant staff make the whole experience really enjoyable, you can wait and order in one of the drawing rooms, then make your way to the table when dinner is ready, its like being a guest in a friends home. Nothing is too much trouble, they make sure you have enough of everything. Breakfast was just as good. We stayed in a superior room and it was!

Although we were here for only one night, it was so relaxing, it felt like longer. The location is close to Connemara and Galway City, so very well placed to visit either.

Room Tip: We faced the railway carriage.

My son and his new wife had their wedding ceremony at Glenlo Abbey Chapel and Hotel. The whole day was a memorable one from start to finish. We were all extended such a warm welcome upon our arrival. The small 18th Century Abbey was perfect setting for the small intimate ceremony shared with all their family. We were then led out to a lovely lounge area where we were served tea & coffee along with yummy fresh baked scones and cookies .After the photos an excellent 4 course meal was enjoyed by everyone .All the food choices were delicious. Later in the evening we all retired to a private room beside the Cellar Bar and again enjoyed finger foods and wedding cake etc. The rooms were spacious and very comfortable and the breakfast the following morning was absolutely delicious and such a large selection to choose from. The attention to detail from start to finish was excellent. I know it will be a very memorable day for the bride and groom but also for all their family who were with them to share such a beautiful day with them.

Room Tip: Most rooms have lovely views as the grounds are so beautiful but ones overlooking the golf course an...
