“Exceptional Stay at the Glenlo Abbey Hotel in Galway, Ireland”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 7, 2014

We have stayed in the Glenlo Abbey a few times now and each visit has been better than the last. From the time we arrived on 23rd December receiving a very warm welcome from Sandra on Reception to when we checked out on 27th December with Maura and everything in between the whole experience was just marvellous. The food was exquisite, absolutely exquisite and the service was second to none. One the waiters actually remembered us from a previous visit. We definitely plan on making a few more return visits in 2014. C & E Holton

Dear DHolton,

We are delighted to hear that you found our food and service exquisite, quite high praise! We relish welcoming returning guests back to Glenlo. In fact, rarely do guests visit Glenlo just once and it is always lovely to see familiar faces coming through our doors. Maura and Sandra will be thrilled to hear your kind words!

We look forward to seeing you both again soon!

Warmest regards

Guest Relations, Glenlo Abbey.

We love old properties and were Immediately struck by the lovely reception area and the unexpected warm welcome by Maura who is doing a super job -great way to start off our visit and other hotel reception staff could learn a lot here. All staff exceptionally helpful, porter could not have done enough. Hotel has lovely ambience, beautiful high ceilings and open wood fires in common areas with luxurious 'sink into' sofas. We had a superior room which was very large and quiet. It had a marble bathroom with bidet, huge comfortable bed and large flatscreen tv. Very comfortable and enjoyable stay with lots of corridors to get lost in. Clientele was 40+ only saw one family there, which suited us! Bar downstairs with food - portions a bit small especially for men, but tasty. Did not try formal dining room. Breakfast very nice, lovely selection. There was a wedding on when we were there but you would never know it. The stay gave us a good feeling and was a very enjoyable break. Would definitely go again.

Room Tip: Our room no. was 110, very large and quiet on ground floor at the back with easy access to outside...

Dear EileenandMatt,

Thank you for your lovely review which we were delighted to read. Our Ffrench room is so cosy at this time of year with the lights been dimmed at twilight and roaring log fires. It is not uncommon to see guests nodding off in our big armchairs! A marvellous compliment to how relaxed our guests feel here! We will pass on your generous comments to Maura and everybody else here!

Warmest regards

YES! Glenlo Abbey has got its kudos back.....having stayed in this hotel many times I can honestly say that the new owners have made great inroads with the development and interiors
The ambience is so friendly ,warm and inviting.....this is true understated elegance
Maura really looked after us upon booking over the phone and the staff right from check in to restaurant were amazing. It felt like each member of staff really enjoyed their job and were proud to be part of Glenlo.
We had our 3 year old with us and she loved the attention from staff
The food in the cellar bar was superb, highly recommend the fish and steak dishes
Yes its 5 star...not for brash, big or bling ....but for charm, hospitality and pure reasons we all want the best... they will spoil you ......now you cant really get better than that!

Room Tip: The sea view rooms (suite 316) have great views of the bay , uninterrupted sea views when you wake...

Stayed here in November went to Galway for the day and ended up staying over....it was a last minute booking and Maura the receptionist gave us directions over the phone. THE best hotel I have stayed in, Maura is a true asset.

All staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The hotel itself and grounds are stunning. We will be back....this time with our own toothbrushes! Some were kindly provided for us on our stay!!

Rooms and breakfast were amazing. Thanks for everything guys and making our night away one we will remember.

Glenlo Abbey was an overall good place to stay and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed dinner in both the River Room and the Pullman restaurants but the best part was the Oak Cellar bar. They had a three piece playing when we visited and we had great fun having a few drinks and singing with friends. Only two things keep me from giving them a 5. First the rooms could use a bit of refurbishment. The room we were in could use new bedding and replacement of a few pieces of furniture. Also the golf course was in serious need of grooming and the clubhouse needs replaced entirely. However there was a maintenance schedule posted while we were there so maybe those things are being addressed. Would definitely stay again and hope to see a bit of improvement in those two areas so that I could give them the 5* they are striving for.

Room Tip: A room upstairs may have a better view. Lower rooms may look out onto the parking area.

Dear jaf24,

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us! We are currently enjoying investment throughout the hotel with new bedding been acquired throughout the hotel. Guests are enjoying this immensely with many likening their sleep experience to that of sleeping on a cloud!

We hope to welcome you back to see the many improvements completed thus far!

Well, have you ever stayed at a place where you felt most welcome from start to finish and everything was just perfect for you for 24 hours?
Maura's greeting at the reception was the best we've got at a hotel in years. 5* easiness, chats and smiles instead of the 'usual formal friendliness'.
Food & drinks, room, service - everything at its best. But again... It is authenticity and the very personal touches you are ultimately looking for, isn't it?
We found all this at Glenlo Abbey, at a very affordable price! Highly recommended. We'll be back!

Had such a lovely new years eve here with my boyfriend. Lovely warm welcome from Maura, friendly mini tour from the porter who brought us up to the room. The four poster bed was gorgeous, the linen, the pillows, the feather duvet, seriously comfortable. Loved it. Room was spacious and warm, no noise or any disturbances. We had dinner in the restaurant, food, staff and wine were all lovely. The room itself is beautiful, the whole building is lovely. Had a look in the abbey itself, think it's used for drinks receptions etc, wasn't set up for anything but I saw a wedding arriving into it when we arrived. Went to the cellar bar for a few drinks to ring in the new year. Our highlight has to be the man playing his keyboard in the bar, he was great. Really entertaining and playing songs you love but haven't heard in ages..............ever hear a man singing 'Wuthering Heights'.......he's your man!!!! Breakfast the next morning was again perfect, even though I was seriously seedy after the craic in the bar the night before. Checked out with the remote control for the huge flat screen tv in my handbag!!!! Rang in case they were intending on charging me for it and what did Maura on reception do..............laughed her head off at the fact I'd made off with it in the first place. Have posted it and hope it gets back to them in one piece. Thank you very much all at Glenlo and we may very well make it a tradition to ring in the New Year with you all in your lovely, comfortable, welcoming hotel. :-)

Room Tip: We had 308, a suite facing the golf course and the views were amazing, think the rain and wind made...

Dear FionaandMichael,

You will be glad to hear that the remote control made it back to Glenlo! We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the festivities in The Oak Cellar Bar! Dating back to the 1720's, this stone vaulted cellar has a unique ambience that does indeed lend itself to a party with little encouragement! We will pass on your nice comments to Maura and everybody here and hope that you will both make ringing in the New Year at Glenlo a tradition.

Warmest regards
